The short answer

Ghodazari Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Consider it only as a separate, low-key day trip for birds, a lake and forest, not as a second Tadoba. Tourism arrangements and entry rules are not published, so confirm with the Chandrapur forest office before driving out, and do not expect guaranteed tiger sightings.

History and context

The story behind Ghodazari Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary was established in 2018, covering about 159 sq km of southern tropical dry forest and a lake, and is classed as a habitat and species management area. It is named after the village of Ghodazari near the middle of the forest. It was created largely to protect tigers and the corridor between the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve and the Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary.

Why it matters

Why Ghodazari Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Ghodazari was declared a sanctuary in 2018 to protect forest that connects two larger tiger habitats. Tigers from Tadoba Andhari and from Umred Karhandla have been recorded here, so the forest works as a movement corridor as much as a destination. That is its real significance: it keeps the reserve connected to the wider landscape.

For a visitor, that means the value is quiet and ecological rather than showy. It suits birdwatchers, repeat Tadoba visitors who want something less crowded, and travellers who accept uncertainty about access. Since tourism infrastructure is not published, it is a place to approach with phone calls and flexibility, not a fixed itinerary.

    Mixed dry forest

Teak, bamboo, mahua and tendu form the cover for sloth bear, leopard, gaur and dhole.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat Ghodazari as a quiet alternative to the better-known Tadoba gates rather than a replacement. The sanctuary lies in Nagbhid tehsil, and the lake listed by the district tourism office is about 6 km off the main Nagpur to Chandrapur highway. The sanctuary is named after the village of Ghodazari, which sits near the centre of the forest, close to the dam and a resort.

What is realistic for a visitor is the lake and its surroundings: calm water that draws native and migratory birds, and dry deciduous forest of teak, bamboo and other mixed trees. Tigers are the reason the sanctuary was created, with at least a dozen counted in the region, but they are elusive and sightings should not be promised. Sloth bear, leopard, gaur, dhole, nilgai and chital are also recorded.

Before you go, phone the forest office for current access, ask whether any guided drive is available, and carry binoculars, water and a warm layer for early starts.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Call the Chandrapur forest office to confirm access before you go
  • Carry binoculars, water and a warm layer for early mornings
  • Arrange a car and driver; do not rely on local transport
  • Do not expect guaranteed tiger sightings or tourist facilities

FAQs

Can I take a safari at Ghodazari?

Safari or entry arrangements are not published, so confirm with the Chandrapur forest office. For a booked tiger safari, the Tadoba gates are the established option.

Will I see tigers?

Tigers are the reason the sanctuary exists, but sightings are never guaranteed and visitor access is limited.

How far is it from Tadoba?

It is a separate outing in Nagbhid tehsil, not next to the Moharli gate; allow a long drive and check distances on a map.
