Tadoba is Maharashtra's oldest national park and the heart of the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandrapur district. Hunting was banned here in 1935, the national park was declared in 1955, the neighbouring Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary followed in 1986, and the two were merged into the present tiger reserve in 1995. The reserve covers about 1,727 square kilometres, of which roughly 626 square kilometres is core habitat and about 1,102 square kilometres is buffer. The name comes from Taru, a local folk deity whose shrine stands beneath a large tree on the bank of Tadoba Lake, and from the Andhari river.
The landscape is dry deciduous forest of teak and bamboo, broken by hills, grassy clearings and a handful of waterbodies that matter more as the summer deepens. Tigers are the headline, but sloth bear, leopard, gaur, dhole, sambar, chital and marsh crocodiles on Tadoba Lake are all part of an ordinary drive, and the bird list runs to roughly 195 species. Sightings are never guaranteed, and the reserve is large, so plan for several drives rather than one.
The practical shape of a visit is set by gates. The reserve is entered through core gates such as Moharli, Khutwanda, Kolara, Navegaon, Pangdi and Zari, and through a longer list of buffer gates, each with its own roster of vehicles and its own nearby lodges. Safari permits are booked online through the forest department's official portal, and the core zones close for the monsoon, while buffer gates generally stay open subject to weather. Chandrapur is the nearest city and railhead; Nagpur is the nearest airport with scheduled flights.
For older travellers, Tadoba is workable if you are honest about heat and bumps. There is almost no walking, but open jeeps are rough, winter dawns are cold, and from April to June the afternoons are very hot. Choose a lodge close to your gate, plan one safari a day if energy is limited, and treat a day in Chandrapur or an unhurried lake-edge morning as part of the trip.

How many days do you have?
Tadoba itinerary
One good day
1 day in Tadoba
A single day only works if you are already based near a gate. Book one morning drive in the Moharli zone through the official portal, be at the gate before it opens and expect to be out for several hours. Return to your lodge for lunch and a proper rest through the heat. In the late afternoon, if you have a booking, take a shorter evening drive in a buffer zone, or simply walk the village lanes near the gate and look at the lake edges outside the park for birds. Do not plan an onward flight from Nagpur on the same day.
Day-by-day plan →Two days
2 days in Tadoba
Drive from Nagpur or Chandrapur, aiming to reach your lodge by early afternoon. Rest, then take an evening safari in a buffer zone near your gate, which is shorter and gentler than a morning drive. Dinner and an early night.

3 days in Tadoba
