Why it matters

Why Kolara Zone is worth your time

Kolara shows that Tadoba is not one landscape but several. The reserve covers around 1,700 square kilometres, and each gate opens onto a different slice of it, with different vegetation, different waterholes and different crowds. A visit that includes both Moharli and Kolara gives you a far better sense of the whole than two drives in one zone.

For older travellers the main advantage is practical: a quieter gate usually means fewer vehicles at each sighting, a calmer drive and a lodge that may feel less hurried. The trade-off is fewer lodges and less choice of guides, so book ahead.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    A different landscape

Meadows, bamboo and teak give a different feel from the lake-heavy Moharli side.

  2. 02

    Fewer vehicles

Guides often describe Kolara as quieter, which helps older travellers.

  3. 03

    A second-zone choice

Pairing Kolara with Moharli spreads your chances across two sides of the reserve.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Book the Kolara zone through the official portal and ask your lodge which gate its drives use, since the reserve is entered through several gates and Kolara is the one on its own side. Allow time for the drive from your lodge to the gate and be there before it opens.

Guides describe Kolara as a varied landscape of meadows, bamboo and teak, with a noted hotspot at Pandharpauni, though specific sightings change from week to week and you should treat any named spot as a possibility, not a promise. The drive is slower than a highway journey; your guide will stop for alarm calls and tracks, and patience pays off.

Because it lies on a different side from Moharli, Kolara works well as a second zone for a stay of two or more nights. Combine it with an evening in a buffer zone near the same gate and keep your afternoons free for rest.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book through the official portal
  • Confirm which gate your lodge uses
  • Allow time for the drive to the gate
  • Bring a warm layer for winter dawns
