Before you go
Tadoba with elderly parents: what to know
- Ask your lodge about the vehicle: open jeeps are bumpy and the seats are high, so request a seat near the front, a cushion and a hand-hold, and tell your driver about any back or knee problems.
- Winter mornings are cold in an open jeep, often in single digits to low teens Celsius at dawn in December and January. Bring a warm jacket, a woollen cap, gloves and a blanket even if the afternoon is pleasant.
- From April to June the heat is severe; at Chandrapur the mean daily high in May is above 43 degrees Celsius. If older travellers are in the group, choose evening drives, carry plenty of water and a hat, and rest through midday.
- Plan only one safari a day if energy is limited. A morning drive is several hours; two rounds in a day is tiring, especially in summer, and the schedule does not allow flexibility.
- The road from Nagpur takes a few hours. Break the journey, carry regular medication in hand luggage, and ask your lodge where the nearest hospital is before you arrive; Chandrapur is the nearest large town.
- Toilet stops inside the reserve are limited to designated rest points. Use facilities at the gate before you enter, and wear shoes you can walk in on uneven ground.
Easiest first
Places in Tadoba sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (11)
- Anandwan, Warora (Culture and craft · Two to three hours, if access is arranged) — Mostly level, but distances between buildings can be long and shade is limited. Go in cooler months and ask whether a vehicle is allowed inside.
- Ballarpur Fort (Places to visit · 45-60 minutes) — The ground is mostly level, but expect uneven stone, rubble and no marked seating or shade. Most older visitors manage the gates and walls from the outside and do not need to walk the whole circuit.
- Buffer Zone Safaris (Places to visit · One safari round of several hours, morning or evening) — Almost no walking in an open jeep, but roads can be bumpy and, in the monsoon, wet or slippery. Ask for a cushion and consider an evening drive in the hot months.
- Ghodazari Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half to full day including driving) — Little walking is likely if visits are by vehicle, but road conditions and facilities are unpublished. Expect long drives, no guaranteed shade or toilets, and cold early mornings in winter.
- Irai Lake and Dam (Places to visit · An hour or two) — Mostly flat and easy, with limited facilities. Bring water, a hat and sun protection, and check the surface before you visit.
- Kolara Zone (Places to visit · One safari round of several hours, morning or evening) — Almost no walking in an open jeep. The tracks are bumpy and the seats are high, so ask for a cushion. Winter dawns are cold and summer afternoons are very hot.
- Mahakali Temple, Chandrapur (Places of worship · Up to an hour) — Mostly level but crowded at busy times. Remove footwear, expect hard floors and queues and consider an early visit.
- Moharli Zone (Places to visit · One safari round of several hours, morning or evening) — Almost no walking, as you stay seated in an open jeep. The ride is bumpy and the seats are high, so ask for a cushion and a front seat. Winter dawns are cold in an open vehicle and summer afternoons are very hot.
- Navegaon Zone (Places to visit · One safari round of several hours, morning or evening) — Almost no walking in an open jeep. The tracks are bumpy and the seats are high, so ask for a cushion. Winter dawns are cold and summer afternoons are very hot.
- Pangdi and Zari (Kolsa) Zone (Places to visit · One safari round of several hours, morning or evening) — Almost no walking in an open jeep, but tracks are rougher and transfers longer. Ask for a cushion and be ready for cold dawns in winter and strong heat in summer.
- Tadoba Lake and Taru Shrine (Places to visit · Part of a safari round; stops are usually short) — Seen from the jeep with little or no walking. Stops are brief and uneven ground makes any short walk difficult. Heat is strong in summer.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Chandrapur Fort (Places to visit · One to two hours) — Mostly level around the gates, but walking along the walls can be uneven and there is little shade or seating. Go early or late and bring water.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Manikgad Fort (Places to visit · Half a day including driving; 1-2 hours at the fort) — This is not a gentle site. The fort stands on a hill, the interior is overgrown and uneven, and there is little shade or seating. Older or less steady travellers should view it from below or skip it.

Practical tips for Tadoba
- Official booking only. Book safaris through the official Maharashtra forest department portal, mytadoba.mahaforest.gov.in. Officials have warned against unofficial sellers, and one tour site states plainly that it is not the official booking platform. Carry the original ID you booked with.
- Monsoon closure. Core zones close for the monsoon, roughly late June to 30 September, though notices vary by year. Buffer gates generally stay open but can be restricted by weather; check the portal rather than relying on a lodge's assurance.
- Weekly closures. Guides differ on weekly closure days for core and buffer gates, so do not assume a day is open. Confirm the roster on the booking portal before you fix your travel dates.
- Heat. At Chandrapur, the mean daily high in May is above 43 degrees Celsius. April to June suit experienced safari-goers; older travellers should prefer evening drives, plenty of water and a long midday rest.
- Cold mornings. From December to February, mean lows at Chandrapur are around 14 degrees Celsius, and dawn in an open jeep feels colder. Bring a jacket, cap and gloves.
- Rules and etiquette. Stay in the vehicle except at designated rest points, keep quiet, do not feed or call animals, and follow your guide. Take photographs without flash and carry out your rubbish.
- Getting there. Arrange a car and driver from Nagpur or Chandrapur. Allow a few hours for the drive and do not plan an onward flight on the same day as your last safari.
- Money and signal. Mobile coverage can be patchy near the gates, so carry some cash for tips and small purchases. Confirm payments and refunds with your lodge in advance.
