How to reach Tadoba by air
The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur (NAG), roughly 110 to 150 km from the gates depending on which gate you use, a drive of about two to three and a half hours. Chandrapur has a small airstrip but no scheduled service according to published sources. Check current flight schedules, which change often.
How to reach Tadoba by train
Chandrapur (CD) is the nearest railhead, about an hour by road from the main gates; Chanda Fort (CAF) is also in the city. Nagpur Junction (NGP) is the major station with the widest choice of trains, a few hours by road from the gates. Book a car transfer ahead, because public transport to the gates is limited.
How to reach Tadoba by road
Roads connect Nagpur and Chandrapur to the reserve, with entry gates on the Moharli, Kolara, Navegaon and Kolsa sides, each reached by a different route. Allow extra time, avoid driving after dark and check which gate your safari is booked for before you set out.
Getting around Tadoba
Inside the reserve you travel in a booked open jeep with a forest-department guide. Between lodges, gates and railheads, use the lodge's own vehicle or a hired car and driver. Ask your lodge to arrange transport rather than relying on hailing a vehicle in the villages.
For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Tadoba
- Ask your lodge about the vehicle: open jeeps are bumpy and the seats are high, so request a seat near the front, a cushion and a hand-hold, and tell your driver about any back or knee problems.
- From April to June the heat is severe; at Chandrapur the mean daily high in May is above 43 degrees Celsius. If older travellers are in the group, choose evening drives, carry plenty of water and a hat, and rest through midday.
- Plan only one safari a day if energy is limited. A morning drive is several hours; two rounds in a day is tiring, especially in summer, and the schedule does not allow flexibility.
- The road from Nagpur takes a few hours. Break the journey, carry regular medication in hand luggage, and ask your lodge where the nearest hospital is before you arrive; Chandrapur is the nearest large town.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
