Day 1: Fort in the morning, backwaters in the afternoon
Reach the Malvan jetty early and take the ferry to Sindhudurg Fort while the light is soft; allow about two hours inside and wear shoes with grip. Return to Malvan for a Malvani fish or vegetarian thali. In the afternoon drive to Tarkarli, take a boat on the Karli backwaters towards Devbag and Tsunami Island if the tide allows, and finish on Tarkarli beach at sunset.

Pacing
Pacing a Tarkarli trip for parents and children
- Take the earliest fort ferry; the boat transfer at the jetty involves a step and a swell, so ask the boatman to help older passengers board.
- Keep midday for rest. The beaches and the fort have little shade between late morning and mid-afternoon.
- Choose a stay with a ground-floor room and a short walk to the car; many homestays have stairs.
- Avoid backwater and island trips in rough weather or when the boatman says the tide is wrong; ask whether life jackets are provided and insist on wearing them.
- Carry shoes with grip for the fort's worn stone and the wet jetty steps, and a hat and water bottle.
- Book scuba or snorkelling only through an established operator, and ask about medical conditions before you try it.
