Day 1: The Round on foot
Start early with the Vadakkunnathan Temple, which is at its calmest in the morning, and wear clothes suited to a Kerala temple. Walk across the Thekkinkadu Maidan to the Shakthan Thampuran Palace museum, which is shaded and level inside; check that it is not a Monday, when it is closed. Have a vegetarian lunch at Hotel Bharath on Chembottil Lane and rest. In the late afternoon, walk to the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi temples to see the two Pooram rivals, then finish at Our Lady of Dolours Basilica as the light falls on its tall tower.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Vadakkunnathan Temple About 1 hour Moderate Early morning or late afternoon, outside Pooram week Shakthan Thampuran Palace Museum About 1 hour Easy Late morning or early afternoon, when heat outside is high Hotel Bharath 45–60 minutes for a meal Easy Breakfast or lunch, outside festival crowds Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Vadakkunnathan Temple: The temple is level in most places, but the courtyards are stone and you must go barefoot, which can be hot at midday and slippery after rain. There is little seating inside. Early morning is the most comfortable, and there is a short walk from the Round to the gate.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Thrissur trip for parents and children
- Temples in Kerala usually require you to be barefoot and in modest dress. Stone floors are hot at midday, so go early or late and wear socks only if the temple allows it.
- Pooram week is very crowded, with lakhs of visitors on the Round. If you are travelling with older family, see the temples on a quiet day instead, or book a hotel window with a view and avoid the crush.
- The Shakthan Thampuran Palace museum is shaded and mostly level, which makes it a good midday stop. Check that it is not a Monday, when it is closed.
- Keep midday free for rest. The hot, humid months are tiring even without much walking, and the monsoon from June to September brings heavy rain.
- Guruvayur has long queues and very strict dress and entry rules. Allow a full half day, and ask your hotel about current darshan arrangements before you go.
- Use autos or app cabs between the Round and the railway station rather than walking along the ring road, which is busy and has uneven pavement in places.
