The short answer

Shakthan Thampuran Palace Museum: what visitors should know first

Yes, especially as a midday stop. It is shaded and mostly level, and takes about an hour. Check that it is not a Monday, when it is closed, and confirm current hours before you go.

History and context

The story behind Shakthan Thampuran Palace Museum

The palace was completed in 1795 and built by Sakthan Thampuran, the ruler of Cochin. It combines a Dutch-influenced design with the traditional Kerala nalukettu courtyard plan, and it has high roofs, thick walls and spacious rooms.

It became a museum in 2005 and is run by the state archaeology department. The grounds include a serpent grove and, according to Kerala Tourism, the final resting place of Sakthan Thampuran and other rulers.

Why it matters

Why Shakthan Thampuran Palace Museum is worth your time

This was the residence of Rama Varma Sakthan Thampuran, who ruled Cochin from 1790 to 1805, a period remembered as a golden era for the dynasty. It is also the palace of the ruler who founded the Thrissur Pooram, so it fills in the background to what you see on the Round.

Its value to a visitor is practical as well as historical: it holds a respectable collection of Kerala bronzes, sculptures, coins and inscriptions, and it is one of the few Dutch-influenced buildings in the town, offering a cool, uncrowded break between temples.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat the palace as an air-conditioned alternative to a hot walk. It stands on Stadium Road near the temple, so you can reach it on foot from the maidan. Allow about an hour. The building, in a Kerala-Dutch style on a traditional nalukettu plan, is part of the exhibit, so spend a few minutes noticing the thick walls, the high roofs and the marble floors.

The galleries are arranged by theme. Look at the bronze and sculpture galleries first, then the numismatics gallery, which includes coins from the 5th century BCE through to British India, and the epigraphy gallery, which shows how ancient writing evolved. A household utensils gallery and a megalithic collection round out the visit.

After the museum, walk round to the serpent grove and the heritage garden on the southern side, which is quiet and shaded. Then cross to the temple, or break for lunch at Hotel Bharath.
