The short answer

Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Worth a half-day if you want green hills and a reservoir close to Thrissur. Treat it as a forest edge visit, not a guaranteed safari: forest entry rules are not published, so check with the Peechi Wildlife Warden's office first.

History and context

The story behind Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary was established in 1958 and covers about 125 sq km in Thrissur district, part of the Palappilly-Nelliyampathy forests. It adjoins Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary to the south, and together the two form a continuous protected area of about 210 sq km.

Why it matters

Why Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Peechi-Vazhani is the second-oldest sanctuary in Kerala and sits close enough to Thrissur to be done in a morning. It protects the catchment of the Peechi and Vazhani dams, so the forest here is also the source of the city's water supply.

Kerala Tourism lists leopards, elephants, gaur and deer among its mammals, along with orchids and teak and rosewood forest. For visitors it offers a quieter, greener alternative to the temple circuit, with the caveat that sightings are never guaranteed.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Peechi dam reservoir

The lake and gardens are the most accessible part and a calm place for a short walk.

  2. 02

    Forest trails

Trekking trails in the area, normally with forest department arrangements.

  3. 03

    Orchids and birds

The sanctuary is noted for over 50 orchid types and for its birdlife.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Take a car or the direct bus from Thrissur to Peechi, a drive of about 20 to 22 km. The dam and its gardens are the easiest part of the visit and are open to the public, but the sanctuary interior is controlled by the forest department, so ask the Peechi Wildlife Division about what visitors may do on the day.

Kerala Tourism describes boating on the lake and trekking trails in the area, and a rest house and information centre at Peechi. Do not turn up expecting a ready-made safari; arrange any guided walk in advance, and expect a forest guide to be required for trails. Go early, since animals and birds are more active before the heat builds.

Seasons matter. November to January is cool and the most comfortable for walking, while the monsoon brings heavy rain and leeches. Summer trekking can be restricted because of fire risk. Combine the sanctuary with a look at the reservoir, and keep a margin before dusk for the road back.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Call the Wildlife Warden at Peechi to confirm entry and guides
  • Start early in the morning
  • Wear closed shoes and light long sleeves
  • Carry water and insect repellent
