Why it matters

Why Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours is worth your time

The Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours, known locally as Puthenpally, is one of the largest churches in Kerala and a major landmark of Thrissur. It belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern-rite community of the St Thomas Christian tradition, and shows how important the Christian community is to Thrissur's character.

Its Bible Tower is widely described as the tallest continuous church tower in Asia, and its Gothic style is unusual in a town best known for Hindu temples, so it adds a different silhouette to the Thrissur skyline.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk up to the basilica from the Round and stand back to take in the front. Two towers of about 146 feet flank the facade, and behind them rises the Bible Tower, reported at about 260 feet. The best view is from the opposite side of the road in late afternoon, when the light warms the stone.

Inside, you will find a cruciform plan with double-storeyed aisles along the nave and transepts and eleven altars, including the main one at about 100 feet high. An octagonal dome sits at the crossing, and the building feels larger than its approximate 25,000 square foot area. There is a perpetual adoration chapel, which is a place for quiet, so lower your voice there.

Combine it with the nearby Lourdes Cathedral for a short church circuit, or end a day on the Round here as the lights come on.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly and cover shoulders
  • Avoid Mass times and feast days for quiet
  • Ask before photographing worshippers
  • Check whether the tower is open to visitors
