Why it matters

Why Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple is worth your time

Paramekkavu is one of the two principal participants in the Thrissur Pooram. When Sakthan Thampuran organised the festival, he arranged the temples into two groups, the Paramekkavu side and the Thiruvambadi side, and the rivalry between them is part of the festival's energy.

Visiting the temple helps you understand the festival's geography. The two groups are reported to be about 500 metres apart, and seeing both temples on an ordinary day, then returning in imagination on Pooram, gives a better sense of the event than a crowded view from the maidan.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The Pooram's eastern side

The temple leads the Paramekkavu group, one of two sides in the festival.

  2. 02

    Kerala temple style

A compact complex in the traditional Kerala style, with sloped roofs and a calm compound.

  3. 03

    The short walk to Thiruvambadi

The rival temple lies a few hundred metres away, so both can be seen in one outing.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The temple sits near the Round, so you can reach it on foot from the maidan. Go early on an ordinary day, when the compound is calm, and leave footwear at the counter. The temple is dedicated to Bhagavathi, a form of the goddess, and follows the Kerala temple style.

To make sense of the visit, think of it as one half of the festival. In the Pooram, the Paramekkavu group and the Thiruvambadi group each bring caparisoned elephants and percussion into the Vadakkunnathan Temple compound, and this temple leads one side. Reading the setting helps you picture the Kudamattam, even on a quiet day.

After the visit, walk on to the Thiruvambadi temple, which is reported to lie about 500 metres away, and compare the two. Then rest at midday before a late-afternoon walk round the maidan.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Dress modestly and go barefoot
  • Check entry rules at the gate
  • Pair with the Thiruvambadi temple
  • Avoid festival days for a quiet visit
