Thulusdhoo is a small inhabited island in Kaafu Atoll, about 27 km north-east of Malé by Wikipedia's reckoning. It is roughly 1.6 km long and 33 hectares in area, with 1,801 residents in 2022 including foreigners. Wikipedia calls it the capital of Kaafu Atoll, and travel guides place it in North Malé Atoll; the two descriptions refer to the same area.

The island is known for two things. One is the Coca-Cola bottling plant, which guides describe as the only one in the Maldives. The other is surf: the reef break Cokes is named after the factory, and several other breaks lie within a short boat ride. Surfers have been coming since, guides say, the 1970s, and guesthouses on the island are built around them.

For everyone else, Thulusdhoo is a calm guesthouse island. You sleep in a small hotel among Maldivian families, swim at a designated tourist beach, and take boats to sandbanks, reefs, dolphins and neighbouring islands. Dress outside the tourist beach is modest, alcohol is not sold on the island, and the call to prayer shapes the day. Prices are lower than at a resort but food, transfers and excursions still add up.

For Indian families and older travellers, the points to weigh are the heat, the boats and the food. Transfers from Malé are by speedboat or a slow public ferry, there is no hospital to speak of on the island, and shade is limited at midday. We could not verify a restaurant here that earns a vegetarian, Jain or vegan tag, so tell your guesthouse about your diet in advance and read the food section before you book.

Food to try in Thulusdhoo

Food and restaurants · 1 guide

Food on Thulusdhoo is simple and fish-led. Typical local dishes named in guides include garudhiya (a tuna broth), mas huni (tuna with coconut and onion, eaten with roshi flatbread) and hedhikaa snacks. Guides put a meal at about $5 to $15. Cafés named in guides include Indulge Thulusdhoo (pizza, gelato, bowls and coffee), Short Break Café, Byyoni, Contagious Pizza Café, Fusion Restaurant and The Sandbar; Byyoni and Bandaha Café are described as serving Maldivian and Indian dishes. Alcohol is not sold on the island.

We could not verify any restaurant on Thulusdhoo that earns a Pure Veg, Jain, vegan or Indian tag, so none is tagged. That does not mean you will go hungry, but it does mean you must plan. Tell your guesthouse about your diet before you arrive, ask in plain words whether dishes contain fish, meat, egg, onion or garlic, and ask what the kitchen can cook for you. Rice, vegetable curries, roshi, fruit, eggs for those who eat them, and pizza or pasta are the most realistic fallbacks, but the hosts decide. Carrying some dry snacks from India for older travellers is sensible.

If strict Jain or vegan food matters, consider booking a resort that publishes a special menu, or arranging meals through the guesthouse, and confirm before you pay.

Shopping in Thulusdhoo

Shopping

Shopping is limited. Guides mention grocery and hardware shops, three souvenir shops, surf shops that sell and rent boards and gear, and fruit from island trees. There is one ATM near the jetty according to guides, so bring enough cash in rufiyaa or US dollars. Most places accept cards but may add a fee. For wider shopping and Indian groceries, do it in Malé before you head out.

Choose without overthinking

Which Thulusdhoo experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Thulusdhoo or a resort island?

Choose Thulusdhoo for lower cost, local contact and a swim at a designated beach. Choose a resort for swimwear everywhere, alcohol, privacy and kitchens used to special diets. The trade-off is cost and distance from daily life.

Sandbank trip or snorkelling trip?

A sandbank is about scenery and photographs, with no shade. Snorkelling shows you the reef but needs swimming comfort. Many operators combine them.

Dolphin cruise or manta trip?

The dolphin cruise needs no swimming and suits all ages. The manta and nurse shark trip is longer, in open water and seasonal, and suits only confident swimmers.

Speedboat or public ferry from Malé?

The speedboat is quick and costs far more; the ferry is cheap but slow, runs on a limited schedule and does not run on Fridays, per guides. For older travellers with luggage, the speedboat is easier.

Thulusdhoo travel tips

  1. 01

    Entry rules

Check the official Maldives Immigration site before you fly. Expect passport validity, a confirmed booking, an onward ticket and an online arrival declaration to matter.

  2. 02

    Dress

Cover shoulders and upper legs outside the tourist beach. Swimwear is for the designated stretch. Nudity and topless sunbathing are not allowed anywhere in the Maldives.

  3. 03

    Alcohol

Alcohol is not sold on the island and bottles can be confiscated at the airport. Penalties for breaking the rules are serious.

  4. 04

    Money

Guides mention an ATM near the jetty and card payments with fees. Bring cash in US dollars and rufiyaa for small shops, and expect extra GST, service charge and Green Tax on guesthouse bills.

  5. 05

    Getting there

Speedboats take about 25 to 40 minutes from the airport area. The public ferry is cheaper but slower, and not on Fridays. Confirm times a day ahead.

    Sun and heat

Humid heat is constant. Take a hat, sunscreen and water on every outing, and rest between 11 am and 3 pm.

  7. 07

    Medical access

The island has limited facilities and the main hospitals are in Malé. Buy travel insurance with medical evacuation, and carry your medicines.

  8. 08

    Weather and boats

Rough seas can cancel excursions and transfers, especially in the wet season. Keep a spare day and avoid tight flight connections.

Thulusdhoo with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan outdoor activity for early morning and late afternoon; the midday sun is strong and shade is limited.
  • Ask your guesthouse for a room near the pier or beach, on a lower floor if stairs are difficult.

How do I get from Malé to Thulusdhoo?

Guides report speedboats of about 25 to 40 minutes from the airport area, at roughly $30 a person, and a slow public ferry that takes about 90 to 150 minutes for about $3, not running on Fridays. Schedules change, so confirm with your guesthouse.
