Plan 01

1 day in Tirthan Valley

  1. 01

Day 1: River, village and a short forest walk

Start from your base near Gushaini with a slow walk along the Tirthan River, then drive to the park's Tirthan range office area at Sai Ropa to ask about day walks. Have lunch at your homestay and rest. In the late afternoon, take the short forest walk to Jibhi waterfall if the path is open, or simply sit by the river. A day trip from Banjar is possible but is mostly spent in the car.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Jibhi Waterfall1 to 2 hours including the walkEasyApril to June and September to November; avoid the monsoon

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Tirthan Valley

  1. 01

    Day 1: Around Gushaini

Spend the morning on an easy riverside walk and village lanes, and visit the Tirthan range office at Sai Ropa about permits for any park walk. After lunch and a rest, try an evening of catch-and-watch at the river if you fish, or simply enjoy the orchard paths.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Banjar heritage

Drive down towards Banjar and visit the Shringa Rishi temple at Bagi. If the weather is clear and you are comfortable with a steep walk, continue to Chehni Kothi to see the tall kath-kuni tower from the outside. Return to the valley for the evening.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Shringa Rishi Temple45 minutes to 1 hourEasyMorning; spring to autumn; fair days are busy
Chehni Kothi1 to 2 hours including the walkModerateApril to June and September to November, on a clear day

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Chehni Kothi: The approach is a village walk with uphill stretches and uneven steps; the tower itself is viewed from the ground. Take it slowly, carry water and go early. If steep paths are a problem, view it from the closest vehicle point.

Plan 03

3 days in Tirthan Valley

  1. 01

Day 1: Gushaini and the river

Arrive by early afternoon, settle in and take a short walk along the Tirthan. Keep the first evening light.

  2. 02

Day 2: Banjar temple and tower

Visit the Shringa Rishi temple at Bagi in the morning, then go on to the Chehni Kothi area. Return for lunch and a rest, with a gentle walk in the evening.

Day 3: Jalori Pass and a lake or fort walk

If the road is open (usually from about mid-March to mid-December depending on snow), drive via Jibhi and Shoja to Jalori Pass early. Choose either the Serolsar Lake walk or the shorter climb to Raghupur Fort, then descend before afternoon cloud or rain.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Jalori PassHalf a day including the drive; a full day with a walkModerateApril to June and October to November, early morning
ShojaOvernight, or a few hours en routeEasyMarch to June and September to November
Serolsar Lake3 to 4 hours return from Jalori PassModerateMarch to November; April to June and October are best
Raghupur Fort3 to 4 hours return from Jalori PassDemandingApril to June and October to November, on a clear morning

Pace: Raghupur Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Jalori Pass: You can reach the pass by vehicle, so the main effort is the winding road and altitude. The surrounding walks are uphill and uneven. If you feel breathless, stay near the vehicle point, enjoy the view and keep walks short.

With parents at Serolsar Lake: The path is mostly forest track with gentle gradients, but it is about 5 km each way at roughly 3,000 m, with uneven ground and little seating. Older travellers can walk part of the way and turn back; carry water and a warm layer.

Pacing

Pacing a Tirthan Valley trip for parents and children

  • Choose a ground-floor room at a homestay close to the road; many properties are reached by steep steps or stone paths.
  • Plan a single base and use short drives, rather than moving every night. The roads are slow and winding.
  • Carry regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit; the nearest large hospitals are in Kullu or Mandi, hours away.
  • Do Jalori Pass by vehicle and take the shorter walk only if comfortable at around 3,000 m; stop if you feel breathless or dizzy.
  • Bring warm layers in every season, even in summer evenings, and sturdy shoes with good grip for wet slopes.
  • Avoid the monsoon months; landslides can cut the road for hours.
