Plan 01

1 day in Tiruvannamalai

  1. 01

Day 1: Temple, ashram and a hill-edge evening

Start at the Annamalaiyar temple soon after the morning rituals begin, when the corridors are cooler, and take your time under the eastern gopuram and in the outer precincts. Rest through the heat. In the afternoon go to Sri Ramanasramam to sit in the samadhi hall and walk the grounds, then return to the temple area for the evening atmosphere. If energy allows, drive a short stretch of the Girivalam road at dusk rather than walking the whole circuit.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Annamalaiyar Temple2 to 3 hoursModerateEarly morning, soon after the first rituals; avoid midday heat and full-moon evenings
Sri Ramanasramam1 to 2 hours; longer for a stayEasyEarly morning or late afternoon; avoid hot midday
Girivalam (Arunachala circuit)3 to 5 hours walking; 1.5 to 2 hours by vehicleDemandingBefore dawn or after sunset, in the cooler months; avoid midday

Pace: Girivalam (Arunachala circuit) involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Annamalaiyar Temple: The floors are level stone but long distances are covered barefoot, and the stone becomes very hot by late morning. There is little seating in the open precincts, and crowds are heavy on festival days. Go early, wear socks to the gate if footwear rules allow, and rest in a shaded corridor.

With parents at Girivalam (Arunachala circuit): The circuit is about 14 km, mostly on roads and paths, and traditionally barefoot. It is a long walk, with heat, traffic and uneven stretches, and limited shade or seating. Older travellers are better off taking a car and walking short segments.

2 days in Tiruvannamalai

    Day 1: The Annamalaiyar temple

Go early for darshan, then walk the precincts slowly and look at the towers from the street outside. Rest at midday. In the late afternoon visit the Seshadri Swamigal Ashram and Yogi Ramsuratkumar Ashram if your interests lean that way, keeping each stop short.

Day 2: Ramanasramam and the hill

Spend the morning at Sri Ramanasramam, then, if you are fit and the weather is cool, climb the marked path towards Skandashram and Virupaksha Cave. Others can drive part of Girivalam, stopping at Adi Annamalai temple and the roadside lingam shrines. End quietly with an evening walk near the temple.

With parents at Skandashram and Virupaksha Cave: The path is marked and partly stepped, but steady and exposed with little shade and few places to sit. Monkeys are common. Older travellers should consider going only part of the way or skipping it.

    Day 3: A day trip

Choose Gingee Fort for hill-fort climbing, Sathanur Dam for a gentle riverside outing, or the Jain complex at Tirumalai if you like rock-cut history. All three work best as early starts with a driver.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Tiruvannamalai trip for parents and children

  • Plan the temple for the morning and a rest after lunch; the stone floors are hot and you walk barefoot inside.
  • Do not attempt the whole 14 km Girivalam on foot unless you are fit and used to long walks; take a vehicle for stretches and stop at the shrines.
  • The hill paths to Skandashram and Virupaksha Cave involve a steady climb; go early, carry water and turn back if it feels too much.
  • Avoid full-moon nights and the Karthigai Deepam period if crowds are a concern; the roads fill with pilgrims.
  • Carry socks for the walk to the temple gate and a small towel; ask whether footwear can be left safely before you enter.
  • Choose a hotel with a lift or ground-floor rooms and a car-drop close to the door.
