Udaipur in Tripura is not the lake city of Rajasthan, though it has its own claim to the nickname. Formerly called Rangamati, it was a capital of the Manikya kings, and today it is the headquarters of Gomati district, about 55 km south of Agartala. The Gomati river runs through it, and tanks (dighis) with names such as Jagannath, Mahadev and Amar Sagar dot the town.

The reason most people come is Tripura Sundari Temple, locally called Matabari, built in 1501 and counted as one of the 51 Shakta pithas. It is the holiest shrine in the state and sits beside Kalyan Sagar, a pond whose turtles are fed by pilgrims. Across the Gomati stands the Bhuvaneswari Temple, a 17th-century Bengali-style temple next to the ruins of the old palace, which Rabindranath Tagore used in his writing.

Beyond the town lie a wooded eco park, the rock carvings at Devtamura reached by boat, and the Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary with its Dumboor reservoir. Most visitors do Udaipur as a long day from Agartala, but one night here lets you see the temple at dawn and visit the forest side without a rush. It is easy and flat, well suited to families and older travellers, with the one caveat that the forest and carvings need a vehicle, a boat and planning.

What and where to eat in Udaipur.

Food to try in Udaipur

Food and restaurants

Food in Udaipur is simple Bengali-style cooking: rice, dal, vegetable curries and fish from local rivers and ponds, served in small eateries around the main road and the Matabari area. Near the temple, stalls sell sweets and the peda that is the traditional offering. Tripuri home dishes with bamboo shoot and fermented fish are seldom on restaurant menus.

There are no famous restaurants to plan around, so ask your hotel for recommendations and eat where there is a steady flow of customers. Carry bottled water and snacks for forest and boat days, and stay with freshly cooked food.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Udaipur

Shopping

Udaipur is a pilgrimage town, so the shops near the temple stock puja items, sweets and flowers, with small stalls selling souvenirs. For bamboo and cane crafts and Tripuri handloom stoles, buy at the state emporium in Agartala, where prices are fixed. If you buy from village weavers, ask what the cloth is made of and pay a fair price.

Choose without overthinking

Which Udaipur experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Tripura Sundari Temple or Bhuvaneswari Temple?

Tripura Sundari is the busy pilgrim shrine, with the turtle pond and a Diwali fair. Bhuvaneswari is quieter, across the Gomati beside the old palace ruins, and rewards a slow visit if you like history.

Gumti sanctuary or Devtamura carvings?

Choose Gumti for forest, birds and a reservoir, but expect a long journey and a forest-office check. Choose Devtamura for the rock-cut figures, reached by boat, if you prefer art and history to wildlife.

Day trip from Agartala or overnight in Udaipur?

A day trip covers the temples comfortably. Stay overnight if you want an early temple visit or an excursion to Gumti or Devtamura, since those add several hours.

Udaipur travel tips

  1. 01

    Festival crowds

The Diwali fair at Matabari draws well over 200,000 pilgrims. Avoid those days unless you want the spectacle and can handle the crush.

  2. 02

    Temple etiquette

Remove shoes, dress modestly, and ask before photographing inside the sanctum. Prasad is traditionally peda.

  3. 03

    Getting around

Auto-rickshaws serve town sights; use taxis and buses for outskirts, and hire a car for Gumti or the Devtamura landing.

  4. 04

    Weather

November to February is dry and cool. The monsoon brings heavy rain from April to September, which affects roads and boat trips.

  5. 05

    Turtle pond

Visitors feed the turtles at Kalyan Sagar with puffed rice; keep to what is sold locally and do not throw plastic or other items.

  6. 06

    Forest permissions

Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary is run by the forest department with an office at Gandacherra. Entry rules and fees are not clearly published, so ask before going.

  7. 07

    Money

Carry cash for small shops and offerings; card acceptance is limited outside Agartala.

  8. 08

    Closing days

Some guides report Tepania Eco Park closed on Thursdays; check before you set out.

Udaipur with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit Tripura Sundari Temple early or on a weekday; Diwali brings crowds that can exceed 200,000 and are exhausting.
  • Kalyan Sagar and the temple court are largely level; carry a seat cushion and ask for a quiet spot if you need rest.
