The short answer
Siju Cave: what visitors should know first
Only if you are happy with a long road: about 125 km and 4 to 5 hours by SUV from Tura. Go between November and March with a local guide, and treat it as an overnight trip. Much of the cave system is water-filled and not open to casual visitors.
History and context
The story behind Siju Cave
Siju Cave was once recorded as India's longest cave: until 1981 it held the national record at around 1,200 m of known passage. Later surveys have measured more than 4.7 km, which makes it the 14th longest cave in India by one account.
Nearly all of the system is flooded or hard to access, and it remains of interest to cave scientists studying its bats and other cave-dwelling life.

Why it matters
Why Siju Cave is worth your time
Siju is among the more important caves in India for the people who study them. Its large bat colonies and cave fauna make it a site for biospeleology, and it held the national record for cave length until 1981, when it was recorded at about 1,200 m. Later surveys have measured over 4.7 km.
For a traveller it is less a spectacle than a glimpse of the subterranean side of the Garo Hills, where limestone and the Simsang river together have carved passages that are still partly unmapped.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
The cave mouth
The entrance and the stream below it are the most accessible and photogenic parts of the site.
- 02
Bats and cave life
Thousands of bats roost here and make it a site for biospeleology research.
- 03
Stalactites and passages
The interior has stalactites, stalagmites and underground streams, though most of it needs expert guidance.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Siju Cave is a trip to plan, not an add-on. From Tura it is about 125 km, and the route via Baghmara takes roughly four to five hours by SUV because parts of the road are rugged. Most visitors stay overnight in or near Baghmara or Siju rather than doing it as a day return.
The cave, also known as Dobakkol, is described by Meghalaya Tourism as one of India's longest limestone caves, with stalactites, stalagmites and underground streams, and it holds thousands of bats. Surveyed passages run beyond four kilometres, but nearly all of it is filled with water or hard to reach, so most visitors see the entrance and the area outside. A local guide is advisable and, for the cave itself, essential.
Combine it with the Siju Bird Sanctuary across the Simsang river for a more complete day. Go in the dry season, November to March, and avoid the monsoon, when roads are poor.
