The short answer

Hujan Locale: what visitors should know first

A good choice for an easy, central sit-down meal built on Indonesian regional food. Its menu leans to meat and seafood, and we could not confirm vegetarian dishes, so ask in advance if anyone does not eat meat.

Why it matters

Why Hujan Locale is worth your time

Many visitors eat only nasi goreng and satay in Indonesia and never see how varied its regional cooking is. A restaurant that works from dishes across the archipelago gives a quick view of that range without leaving the centre of Ubud.

For Indian families it is a useful middle option between the street warungs and the fine-dining tasting rooms. The setting is a proper restaurant with table service, and it is named by three independent pages we opened. The honest limit is diet: the dishes we could verify are largely meat and seafood, so vegetarians should check first rather than assume.

How to experience it

The official site describes Hujan Locale as modern Indonesian food, with lunch, dinner, drinks and wine menus. Dishes named on the site include tongseng kambing, slipper lobster dumplings, beef sate padang, nasi bakar babi, bebek guling asap and a creme brulee cheesecake. Those names show a menu that includes lamb, beef, pork, duck and seafood.

At lunch the site mentions Warteg, a build-your-own plate concept. This is the easier way into the menu for first-time visitors, because you can see and choose what goes on the plate. Ask staff what is on offer that day, which dishes are mild, and whether any plates are meat-free.

The site says the all-day dining room is open from noon to 10 pm daily, with the bar open from noon until late. Wikivoyage and Silverkris also name it, with Wikivoyage noting it was created by chef Will Meyrick. Allow a relaxed meal and keep the rest of the afternoon light, particularly in warm weather.
