Rice terraces, temple courtyards, art museums and quiet lanes: Bali's cultural heart, best seen early and slowly.

Ubud sits in the green uplands of Gianyar Regency, about an hour or more inland from Bali's southern beaches. It has no municipal status of its own: it is a district town whose lanes run between rice fields, family temples, art galleries and small guesthouses. Legend credits the priest Rsi Markandya with founding the Gunung Lebah temple at Campuhan, where two rivers meet, and the town's name is said to come from the Balinese word for medicine, because of its herbs.

The town became known for painting and carving in the 20th century, when the royal family of Ubud, based at Puri Saren Agung, backed local artists and invited foreign painters to work alongside them. That legacy is why a short walk can take you from a palace courtyard to the Puri Lukisan museum, a dance performance and a temple pond full of lotus. Ubud is a place for temples, craft and slow mornings rather than for a beach holiday.

Most visitors from India combine Ubud with a few nights on the coast. It works well for families and older travellers if you plan around three things: the heat and rain of the season, the steps at sites such as Goa Gajah and Gunung Kawi, and traffic on the roads in and out of town. Hire a car with a driver for the outlying sights, keep the central ones for walking, and dress for temples with a sarong and covered shoulders.

Food to try in Ubud

Food and restaurants · 16 guides

Ubud has a larger choice of vegetarian and vegan food than most Indonesian towns, because it has long drawn yoga, wellness and plant-based travellers. Balinese and Indonesian staples such as nasi campur, gado-gado, tempeh and vegetable lawar are easy to find as vegetarian versions at warungs, though you should ask about shrimp paste, fish sauce, egg and meat stock, which are common in sauces. Pork and seafood are widely served, so say clearly that you eat no meat, fish or egg.

For diners from India, three listings were checked for this guide. Alchemy in Penestanan describes its menu as completely plant-based. Madhubann on Jalan Raya Ubud is listed by a vegetarian directory as a pure vegetarian Indian restaurant with thalis, dosas and marked vegan dishes. Mumbai Station on Jalan Raya Sanggingan serves Indian vegetarian food with vegan options. Jain cooking (no onion, garlic or root vegetables) is not something we could confirm at any Ubud restaurant, so ask the kitchen directly each time, and consider staying somewhere with a kitchen if this is strict for you. Menus and opening hours change, so confirm before making a special trip.

Shopping in Ubud

Shopping · 1 guide

Ubud's best-known shopping is craft rather than fashion. The Pasar Seni (art market) opposite Ubud Palace sells sarongs, batik, baskets, carved wooden pieces and small souvenirs, and bargaining is normal; mornings are less crowded. Jalan Raya and the side lanes carry galleries, silver jewellery workshops and wood-carving studios. Painting is the town's signature, so museum shops and established galleries are a safer place for original works than street sellers.

Prices in the market are not fixed, so compare two or three stalls before buying, and pay in rupiah to avoid poor exchange rates. Check what you can legally carry home: antique-looking carvings, shells, and food items can raise questions at customs. For textiles, ask whether a piece is hand-woven, hand-stamped or machine-printed; the price should match.

Choose without overthinking

Which Ubud experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Tirta Empul or Goa Gajah, if you only have time for one temple?

Pick Tirta Empul if you want to see a living ritual: pilgrims bathe under a row of spouts in a sacred spring, and it is further out near Tampaksiring. Pick Goa Gajah if you want an older rock-carved site close to Ubud, but be ready for a long flight of steps.

Tegallalang terraces or the Campuhan Ridge Walk?

Tegallalang is a drive of about 10 km north of Ubud and the classic view of terraced rice fields, but it is busy and its paths are steep. Campuhan Ridge Walk is a roughly 2 km paved path on the edge of town and easier on the legs, though it has little shade.

Ubud Palace, Puri Lukisan or Neka for a first art stop?

Ubud Palace is best for context and is the easiest to combine with the market. Puri Lukisan is the oldest of the museums and has shaded gardens. Neka has the largest Arie Smit collection, plus a keris pavilion, and needs a short ride from the centre.

Stay in Ubud's centre or in the river valley?

The centre is better if you want to walk to meals and sights. The valley gives quieter views but means driving for everything, which suits travellers with a car and driver.

Ubud travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat and rain

Daily highs stay around 29 to 30 degrees Celsius all year, with high humidity. The wet season runs roughly November to March; carry a light rain jacket and shoes with grip.

  2. 02

    Getting around

Pavements are narrow and shared with scooters. For outlying sights, agree a day rate with a driver in advance and confirm what it includes.

  3. 03

    Temple dress

Carry a sarong and cover shoulders. At active temples, follow the staff on whether you may enter inner courtyards.

  4. 04

    Monkeys

At the Monkey Forest and elsewhere, keep food, bags and loose items out of sight and do not touch the monkeys.

  5. 05

    Money

Rupiah is the local currency. Use ATMs inside banks or hotels and be cautious with street money changers who offer unusually good rates.

  6. 06

    Visa and levy

Indian passport holders generally need a visa for Bali and a separate tourist levy; both change, so use the official immigration and Love Bali sites before you fly.

  7. 07

    Health

Drink bottled or filtered water. Ubud has clinics, but serious cases may need a hospital in Denpasar, so buy travel insurance with medical cover.

  8. 08

    Ceremonies

Bali's religious calendar means roads can be busy with processions. Be patient, do not walk through a ceremony, and ask before photographing worshippers.

Ubud with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan the day around one big outing in the morning and a rest after lunch. Humidity is high all year, and afternoon rain is common in the wet season.
  • Goa Gajah and Gunung Kawi both involve long flights of steps down to the site, and the same climb back up. Go only as far as you are comfortable, and ask the driver to wait close by.

Day trips from Ubud

Useful answers

Ubud FAQs

How many days are enough for Ubud?

Two to three nights covers the central sights and the Tampaksiring temples without rushing. Add a night if you want a slower pace or a day trip to Kintamani.

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Bali?

Generally yes. Visa on arrival or an electronic visa has been available to Indian citizens for tourism, and Bali also charges a separate tourist levy. Rules and fees change, so check the official Indonesian immigration site and the Love Bali levy page before you travel.

Is Ubud good for elderly parents?

It can be, with planning. Central sights are close together, but some temples have long flights of steps, paths are uneven and rain makes them slippery. Use a car and driver, choose a hotel with ground-floor rooms, and keep afternoons free.

Can vegetarians and vegans eat well in Ubud?

Yes. Ubud has many vegetarian and vegan cafes, and several Indian vegetarian restaurants. Pure-veg and Jain needs still require checking with each kitchen, since sauces in Indonesian cooking often use shrimp paste or fish.

What should I wear at temples?

A sarong over the legs and covered shoulders are standard. Many temples lend or rent sarongs at the entrance.

Is there a train to Ubud?

No. Bali has no passenger rail. Reach Ubud by road from Ngurah Rai Airport or other areas of Bali.
