Area by area

Ubud neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Central Ubud (Jalan Raya, Monkey Forest Road, Hanoman)

Best for: First-time visitors who want to walk to the palace, market, museums and restaurants

Good to know: The most convenient base, with food, pharmacies and a short ride to everything. Traffic and noise are the trade-offs, and some guesthouses are up flights of steps. Ask for a ground-floor room and car access to the door.

Sights in this area: Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), Pura Taman Saraswati, Puri Lukisan Museum, Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung)

  2. 02

    Penestanan and Campuhan

Best for: Travellers who want quieter lanes near the Campuhan Ridge Walk and good cafes

Good to know: A short ride or a longer walk from the centre. Lanes can be narrow and hilly, so check the approach if mobility is limited.

  3. 03

    Sayan and Kedewatan (river valley)

Best for: Families and older travellers who prefer valley views and a resort feel

Good to know: More space and quiet, but you will need a car or shuttle for dining and sightseeing. Check shuttle schedules and whether the resort has lifts.

  4. 04

    Tegallalang and the northern hills

Best for: A slow rural stay near rice terraces

Good to know: Peaceful and scenic but further from town services. Better for travellers with their own car and driver.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
