How to experience it
Leave Udaipur early and drive through the Aravalli hills, passing through Rajsamand. The road is winding but in good condition. At the base of the fort, you will see the main gate and the beginning of the ramparts.
The fort was built to withstand long sieges, and the walls are massive—reportedly 36 km of perimeter, though the full length is no longer walkable. Instead, focus on the main routes: the gateway complex, the central palace ruins, and the rampart walks with views. There is a temple dedicated to Neelakanth (Shiva) at the highest point. The site is largely ruined but that is part of its appeal—you are reading a fort from its skeleton.
Hire a local guide if available; the fort is large and confusing. Or walk in sections: do the gateway area, then the ramparts nearest the entrance, then rest at a viewpoint. Do not feel obliged to see everything.
