Before you go
Udayagiri with elderly parents: what to know
- Skip the fort climb if steps and heat are a problem; visit the Paruveta Mandapam in the town instead.
- Start every outing at first light; afternoons from March to October are hot.
- Hire a car and driver from Nellore for the full day; local transport near Udayagiri is limited.
- Carry water, snacks, a hat and any regular medicines; there are no pharmacies on the hill.
- Choose a Nellore hotel with a lift and a good restaurant; there is no reliable lodging at Udayagiri itself.
- Wear grip shoes and dress modestly for temples; remove footwear at shrines.
Easiest first
Places in Udayagiri sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (2)
- Somasila Dam (Places to visit · 1-2 hours at the site) — Mostly flat walking at viewpoints, but shade and seating are limited and facilities are basic. Carry water, a hat and any medicines.
- Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — Level temple precinct with a short walk from the road; queues can build on festival days. Good for most older visitors.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Paruveta Mandapam and Balakrishna Temple (Places to visit · About 1-2 hours including the town temples) — Much gentler than the hill fort, but the ground is uneven, shade is limited and the sites are not set up for visitors with seating or ramps. Go in the cooler hours and take a companion.
- Penusila Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Penchalakona (Places of worship · 2-3 hours at the temple; a full day with the drive) — The temple at the foot of the hills is manageable for most, but queues on Saturdays and festival days can be long and the surrounding paths are uneven. Arrive early and go on a weekday.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Udayagiri Fort (Places to visit · 3-5 hours for the climb and return; allow a full morning) — Not suitable for most older visitors: access is by steps and a steep forest trail, with little shade, no handrails to speak of and no seating or toilets on the hill. Seniors are better off at the Paruveta Mandapam in the town.

Practical tips for Udayagiri
- Heat. April to June is very hot, with May means near 40 C at Nellore and more inland. Start the fort at sunrise or choose another season.
- Getting there. There is no railway at Udayagiri. Take a train to Nellore or Kavali and continue by road; a hired car is easiest.
- The climb. Access is by steps and forest trail only. Distances in published accounts vary, so ask locally and take a guide.
- Water and food. Nothing is sold on the hill. Carry water and snacks, and eat in Nellore before and after.
- Footwear and clothing. Wear grip shoes and light, long clothes for the forest trail and modest dress at temples and mosques.
- Monsoon. The northeast monsoon brings heavy rain in October and November; steps and trails get slippery, so check conditions.
- Money. Carry cash for small purchases and local tips; ATMs are in Nellore and larger towns, not on the hill.
- Lodging. There is no reliable lodging at Udayagiri, so book hotels in Nellore.
