Walk Phangrei in the morning, then drive about 16 km to Khangkhui Mangsor cave with a local guide.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Khangkhui Mangsor Cave: The cave floor is uneven and likely to be damp and dark, so do not expect lighting or handrails. Older travellers can enjoy the approach and village, and enter only with a guide, a torch and good shoes.

Plan 03

3 days in Ukhrul

  1. 01

    Day 1: Shirui

Full day at Shirui, trekking only as far as you are comfortable.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Phangrei and Khangkhui

Morning hill walk and afternoon cave visit.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Longpi pottery

Drive along the Ukhrul-Jessami road to Longpi village, roughly 38 km, to see potters at work and buy direct. Return by late afternoon.

Pacing

Pacing a Ukhrul trip for parents and children

  • Hire a car with a driver; hill roads are narrow and winding.
  • Carry warm layers even in summer; Ukhrul stands at about 1,800 m.
  • Plan one outing a day. Shirui and Phangrei are both demanding walks.
  • Choose lower slopes and viewpoints over summits if you have heart, breathing or knee problems.
  • Carry water, snacks and medicines; village shops are limited.
  • Check road conditions after rain, as landslides can block hill roads.
