Before you go
Ukhrul with elderly parents: what to know
- Hire a car with a driver; hill roads are narrow and winding.
- Carry warm layers even in summer; Ukhrul stands at about 1,800 m.
- Plan one outing a day. Shirui and Phangrei are both demanding walks.
- Choose lower slopes and viewpoints over summits if you have heart, breathing or knee problems.
- Carry water, snacks and medicines; village shops are limited.
- Check road conditions after rain, as landslides can block hill roads.
Easiest first
Places in Ukhrul sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (2)
- Kachai Village (Culture and craft · 2 to 3 hours) — Village paths are uneven but mostly gentle. The main effort is the winding hill drive, so plan comfort stops and carry water.
- Longpi (Nungbi) Black Pottery (Shopping · Half a day including travel) — The effort is the long drive on hill roads, not the walking. Village lanes may be uneven, so wear good shoes and take breaks along the way.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Hundung Mova Cave (Places to visit · 1 hour) — Expect an uneven, slippery path and a dark cave without handrails or lighting. Older travellers can view the entrance and surroundings and leave the interior to fitter companions.
- Khangkhui Mangsor Cave (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The cave floor is uneven and likely to be damp and dark, so do not expect lighting or handrails. Older travellers can enjoy the approach and village, and enter only with a guide, a torch and good shoes.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)
- Shirui National Park (Shirui Kashong Peak) (Places to visit · A full day from Ukhrul) — The climb is long and steep, with narrow footpaths, high altitude and rain risk. Most older travellers should enjoy the village and the lower slopes, and leave the summit to fit trekkers. Carry rain gear, and avoid it if you have heart or breathing problems.
- Sihai Phangrei Hill (Places to visit · 3 to 4 hours) — The climb is long and steep with several rest stops needed, and there is little seating or shade. Older travellers should plan to enjoy the lower slopes and the views, and not push for the top.
