The short answer

Dodital Lake: what visitors should know first

Go only if you are fit and willing to walk for two days up. It is a rewarding forest trek with a calm lake and a small Ganesha shrine at the end. It is not a day trip for older or less mobile travellers.

History and context

The story behind Dodital Lake

The lake is named for sage Dodi, who is said to have meditated there. The Assi Ganga flows from it into the Bhagirathi at Gangori, near Uttarkashi. The Ganesha association is local mythology, not documented history.

Why it matters

Why Dodital Lake is worth your time

Dodital is one of the most accessible high-altitude lakes near a Garhwal town. Its name is linked to the freshwater trout in the water, and local belief makes it the birthplace of Ganesha, while the Assi Ganga that flows out of it joins the Bhagirathi at Gangori, just outside Uttarkashi.

It gives Uttarkashi a trek that works as a first Himalayan outing for fit visitors. The route, forest, lake and shrine together show the quieter side of the Bhagirathi valley that most Char Dham pilgrims never see.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this as a trek, not a sightseeing stop. The trailhead is Sangamchatti beside the Assi Ganga, around 15 km and under an hour by road from Uttarkashi. Some operators now start higher at Agoda because a road reaches it; check what the road allows.

Itineraries differ, but a common pattern is a night on the way up, a night near the lake, and a descent back down the long forest trail. You pass through oak and rhododendron woods, small meadows and a Forest Rest House at the lake. Operators generally offer an optional extra day to Darwa Top, over 4,000 m.

At the lake, you find a small Ganesh temple and trout in the water. Camping is the norm. In winter, snow can stop progress beyond the lake, so check conditions and book through a registered operator.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book through a registered trek operator
  • Carry warm layers and rain cover
  • Confirm road access to Agoda before booking
  • Acclimatise and pace yourself
  • Check permit rules with the forest office
