  1. 01

    Hajipur

Best for: Travellers who want a closer base without staying in the village

Good to know: The district headquarters has hotels, markets and a major railway junction. It is a more practical base than the village, and the drive to the main sites is shorter than from Patna. Choose a hotel with reliable power and check lift access if you are travelling with elders.

  2. 02

    Patna

Best for: Comfort, flights and trains, with a day trip to Vaishali

Good to know: The capital has the widest choice of hotels, hospitals and restaurants, plus the airport. The trade-off is a long road day to Vaishali, with bridge traffic that can add time. Best for a single-day visit combined with the Patna Museum.

  3. 03

    Vaishali and Basarh villages

Best for: Travellers who want early starts and quiet evenings

Good to know: Accommodation is limited and basic, and the state tourism corporation has run a hotel and hostel here. Check availability, rooms and meals in advance and confirm the current rates. A good choice for those who want to visit the sites at opening time.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
