The short answer

Aliyar Dam and Park: what visitors should know first

Worth a short stop on the way up or down, especially with children. Treat it as a pleasant break rather than the main attraction, check what is open and expect a basic park rather than a polished one.

History and context

The story behind Aliyar Dam and Park

Wikipedia records the Aliyar dam as built across the Aliyar river between 1959 and 1969 as part of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project, and inaugurated on 2 October 1962 by Jawaharlal Nehru. A hydel power project is recorded as commissioned in 2002.

The dam is about 72 m high, and the park, garden and aquarium are maintained by the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Corporation.

Why it matters

Why Aliyar Dam and Park is worth your time

Aliyar matters because it explains the plateau above it. The reservoir is part of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project, a chain of dams linked by tunnels and canals that carries water across the hills for irrigation and hydroelectric power. The dam was built on the Aliyar river and inaugurated on 2 October 1962 by Jawaharlal Nehru, with K. Kamaraj presiding, though construction is recorded as running from 1959 to 1969.

For a traveller, it is the gateway where the plains give way to the Ghats. Looking up from the reservoir, you see the climb you are about to make, and from Loam's View Point you will look back down at it. Understanding that this water supply and the tea above it are linked helps make sense of the whole landscape.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Aliyar sits at the foot of the climb to Valparai, and the best way to use it is as a breather. Park near the entrance, walk through the gardens and look at the reservoir against the wall of the hills. The aquarium and play area are aimed at children, so they are the easiest way to buy goodwill before a long drive up.

If you want to go on the water, boating is available, and the reservoir is calmer than you expect. Go in the morning, before the plains heat up. In the monsoon the surrounding slopes are a deeper green and the reservoir fills. In the dry season, levels fall and the park can look tired.

Monkey Falls is about 6 km further along the same road, so you can pair the two. Leave plenty of time for the climb afterwards: you do not want to reach the upper bends after dusk. Treat the dam site itself with respect, since it is an irrigation and hydro structure.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check boating and park timings locally
  • Carry water and sun protection
  • Do not leave bags in parked vehicles because monkeys are common
  • Combine with Monkey Falls and Loam's View Point
