Why it matters

Why Monkey Falls is worth your time

The falls are small compared with the great waterfalls of the Western Ghats, but their value is the setting. They lie inside the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park, now part of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, and the forest around them is the first real taste of the evergreen belt that continues all the way up to Valparai. The Tamil Nadu urban portal describes a 60-foot fall reached by a short forest trek.

For travellers, Monkey Falls also marks the point where the plains end and the forest begins: you cross the check post and the road narrows and climbs. It is a good place to learn the forest rules early, including no feeding, no litter and respect for the animals that live here.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Think of Monkey Falls as a forest break with a waterfall at the end, rather than a major spectacle. After the Aliyar check post, the road runs through the wildlife sanctuary, and the falls are near Arutperunjothi Nagar. Pay the entry fee, follow the path and look for the water falling over rock into a cool pool.

The name is honest. Monkeys wait for visitors, and they will open bags and motorbike tank covers for food, so carry nothing edible in the open and do not feed them. Keep a hand on any child and stay off wet rocks. In heavy rain, the falls may be closed or dangerous, and swimming can be risky in monsoon flow.

Plan the stop in the morning on the way up, then continue to Valparai. If you want longer guided treks, ask the Forest Department well ahead; the Wikipedia page suggests requesting permission about two weeks in advance. Otherwise, a short visit is plenty.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check the forest check post for current entry rules
  • Wear shoes with good grip
  • Keep food out of sight
  • Avoid the falls in heavy rain
