Day 1: Ghat road and plateau sights
Leave Pollachi early so you reach the hairpin bends in good light. Stop at Aliyar reservoir and Loam's View Point at the ninth bend, then Monkey Falls if the forest check post is open. After arriving in Valparai, have lunch and drive to the Karumalai Balaji temple and the nearby Velankanni church, both inside Karamalai estate. Finish with the short walk to Nallamudi Poonjolai viewpoint if the weather is clear. Start the return before dusk, as the descent is slow and wildlife can be on the road.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Loam's View Point 20–40 minutes Easy Morning in the dry months, December to February; sunset for the plains view Monkey Falls 45–90 minutes Moderate Dry months; avoid heavy rain Karumalai Balaji Temple 1–1.5 hours Moderate Morning, before the weather closes in Nallamudi Poonjolai Viewpoint 1.5–2 hours with the drive Moderate Clear mornings from December to February Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Monkey Falls: The approach involves some walking and slippery rock near the falls. Older travellers should wear shoes with grip and may prefer to view from the lower area. There is little seating. Do not enter the water during heavy flow.
With parents at Karumalai Balaji Temple: The final approach is about 500 m uphill on foot, because vehicles cannot go past the entrance. Older visitors should go slowly and rest on the way; there is little seating. The temple is small, and queues are shorter on weekdays.

Day 2: Viewpoints and waterfalls
Go early to Nallamudi Poonjolai for the view across the valley, then continue to Chinnakallar Falls if the trail is safe and open. Ask about permission for Upper Sholayar Dam or Grass Hills in advance; if you have it, use the morning for that. Return after a rest, with the descent finished before dark.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Chinnakallar Falls 1.5–2 hours with the drive Moderate December to February, in dry weather Upper Sholayar Dam 2–3 hours with the drive Easy Dry months; avoid heavy rain Grass Hills (Akka Malai) Half to full day Demanding Dry months, December to February Pace: Grass Hills (Akka Malai) involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Chinnakallar Falls: The trail is about 600 m on a narrow path, which can be wet and uneven. Older travellers should wear shoes with grip and go slowly; there is little seating. In heavy rain or mist, skip it.
With parents at Grass Hills (Akka Malai): Access to Grass Hills usually involves a long jeep drive and walking on grassland at altitude, in weather that changes fast. It is a demanding outing, with limited facilities, and is not suitable for those with heart, breathing or mobility problems.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Valparai trip for parents and children
- Break the climb with stops at Aliyar and Loam's View Point; the 40 hairpin bends can bother those prone to motion sickness, so travel on an empty stomach or take advice from a doctor first.
- Hire a car and driver for the whole stay. Sights are spread along estate roads and public buses are slow and crowded.
- Nallamudi Poonjolai needs about a 1 km uphill walk and the Karumalai temple a short 500 m climb; go early, take water and rest where you can.
- Pack a light jacket and rain cover even in dry months: mornings are cool and mist moves in quickly.
- Do your driving in daylight and plan to reach your stay before dusk; elephants and other wildlife use the roads and estates.
- Avoid June to September if you want comfort, because heavy rain, slippery paths and landslide risk make walking hard.
