The short answer

Topslip to Pandaravarai Trek: what visitors should know first

A half-day guided forest walk of 8 km there and back over about 4 hours, mostly under tree cover. It is a walk in the forest rather than a viewpoint trek. Active older travellers may manage it; others can take the forest department's vehicle safari at Topslip instead.

History and context

The story behind Topslip to Pandaravarai Trek

Topslip takes its name from the 19th-century practice of sliding teak logs down the hills from here. Karian Shola, on this trail, was protected from the early 1900s and is now part of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.

Why it matters

Why Topslip to Pandaravarai Trek is worth your time

Topslip is the main visitor centre of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, one of the richest forests in the Western Ghats. Karian Shola, on this route, is one of the reserve's protected core habitats, and the walk gives a rare chance to be inside it on foot with a trained guide.

Tigers, elephants and sloth bears all live here, which is why access is only with forest department guides. Fees from Trek Tamil Nadu bookings go back into conservation and local employment.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Report at the Topslip reception centre for the morning start (8 am at the time of writing). Topslip is reached from Pollachi, about 36 km away; from Valparai it is a long drive down the Aliyar ghat road and round through Pollachi, so most visitors stay at Topslip or Pollachi the night before.

The route is about 4 km each way. It leads through Karian Shola and tall evergreen forest, then opens into small grasslands and crosses a stream before turning back. The highest point is about 1,280 m (4,199 ft) according to the forest department. Gaur, spotted deer and many birds are often seen; Nilgiri tahr live on the higher slopes.

Expect a walk among big trees rather than grand views. Wear dull colours, walk quietly, and carry leech socks in damp months.
