The short answer
Durga Kund Temple: what visitors should know first
Worth a short visit, particularly if you are already seeing Sankat Mochan and Tulsi Manas nearby. The temple is small and quick to see, the setting by the kund is lovely, and it is easy on seniors, except during Navratri when crowds swell.

Why it matters
Why Durga Kund Temple is worth your time
The temple was built in the 18th century, traditionally credited to a Bengali queen, Rani Bhabani, and is dedicated to Durga as the protector of Kashi's southern side. Its Nagara-style tiered spire and the ochre-red colour it is painted, associated with the goddess, make it one of Varanasi's most distinctive temples.
The kund beside it is part of an old network of sacred tanks in Varanasi, many of which have disappeared or shrunk. During Navratri the temple becomes one of the city's main centres of devotion to the goddess, with large crowds and festivities.

How to experience it
Visit in the morning as part of a loop with Sankat Mochan and Tulsi Manas, which are only a few minutes apart. Walk around the courtyard and take in the layered, multi-tiered red spire, then have darshan inside. The shrine is small and darshan is usually quick outside festival days.
Afterwards, walk to the edge of the kund, the square stepped tank beside the temple. Early in the day the reflection of the red temple in the water is beautiful, and it is the spot most people photograph. Stay on the upper edge rather than going down the tank steps, which are steep and can be slippery.
Keep a close watch on belongings. The monkeys here are used to people and quick to grab food, flowers and loose items.
Plan with confidence
Visit as a guest, not a spectator.
- Close to Sankat Mochan and Tulsi Manas, so visit all three together
- Vehicle access is right up to the main road entrance
- Beware of monkeys and keep bags closed
- Admire the kund from its edge. The tank steps are steep
- Expect heavy crowds during Navratri
