Why Tulsi Manas Temple is worth your time
Tulsidas composed the Ramcharitmanas, the Awadhi retelling of the Ramayana that brought the story of Rama into everyday Hindu devotion across north India, and he is closely linked with Varanasi. According to tradition, this site is where he wrote the epic. The temple, built in the 1960s by a merchant family, was conceived as a memorial to him and his work.
Unlike the ancient temples of the old city, Tulsi Manas is a 20th-century building of white marble, open and orderly. That makes it an interesting counterpoint: it shows how devotion to a text, rather than a single sacred image, can shape a place of worship.

How to experience it
Walk slowly around the main hall and look at the walls. They are covered with verses and scenes from the Ramcharitmanas, carved or inscribed in marble. For grandparents who grew up with Tulsidas's chaupais, recognising favourite passages is often the highlight. Darshan of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman is at the central shrine.
Upstairs, a gallery of figurines and moving tableaux tells episodes of the Ramayana. Children usually enjoy it, even if it feels a little old-fashioned. If stairs are a problem, the ground floor alone is a complete visit.
Because it is next door to Durga Kund and a short drive from Sankat Mochan, the easiest plan is to see all three in one gentle morning, ending with tea near Assi or a drive to BHU.
