Why it matters

Why Sarnath and Dhamek Stupa is worth your time

After attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha is believed to have come to the deer park at Sarnath, then called Isipatana, and delivered his first sermon to five companions. The event is known as setting in motion the wheel of the Dharma. Sarnath is therefore one of the four most important places of Buddhist pilgrimage.

The Dhamek Stupa as seen today largely dates from around the 5th–6th century CE, in the Gupta period, and stands on earlier foundations traditionally linked to the emperor Ashoka. Sarnath is also sacred to Jains, being associated with the Tirthankara Shreyansanath. It was excavated from the 19th century onwards, and much of what was found is now in the Sarnath Museum.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive out from Varanasi. It usually takes 30–45 minutes, depending on traffic. Start at the ASI archaeological park, where the Dhamek Stupa rises from the lawns and brick foundations of ancient monasteries spread around it. Walk slowly around the stupa, as pilgrims do, and look at the carved stone band on its lower section. Buddhist pilgrims from across Asia often sit here chanting, so keep your voice low.

Next door, the Mulagandhakuti Vihara, a 20th-century temple built by the Maha Bodhi Society, has murals of the Buddha's life painted by a Japanese artist, and a Bodhi tree grown from a cutting of the one in Sri Lanka. Several other countries, including Thailand, Tibet, Japan and Myanmar, have temples in Sarnath. Visit one or two rather than all of them. The Chaukhandi Stupa, on the approach road, is a quick stop for photographs.

Finish at the Sarnath Museum across the road for the Lion Capital of Ashoka. Have lunch in Sarnath and return to the city for an afternoon rest. This makes an easy half-day that balances the intensity of the ghats.

  • Combine with the Sarnath Museum. Check its weekly closing day
