Why Sarnath Museum is worth your time
Established in 1910, the Sarnath Museum is the oldest site museum of the Archaeological Survey of India. It was built to keep the finds from the Sarnath excavations close to the place they came from.
The Lion Capital originally crowned an Ashokan pillar that stood at Sarnath, marking the site of the first sermon. After independence, India adopted it as the national emblem, and the wheel on its base inspired the chakra on the national flag. Standing in front of the original connects the Buddhist history of Sarnath with modern India.

How to experience it
Go straight to the central hall to see the Lion Capital of Ashoka: four lions seated back to back on a drum carved with animals and wheels. It was carved in polished sandstone in the 3rd century BCE and is the origin of India's national emblem. Most visitors find it smaller and more finely finished than they expected. Spend a few quiet minutes with it.
Then look for the famous seated Buddha in the teaching gesture, a masterpiece of Gupta-period Sarnath sculpture with a delicately carved halo. The remaining galleries hold sculptures of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain deities found during excavations nearby. Labels are brief, so hire a guide at the site or read up beforehand if your family wants the full story.
Photography has generally not been allowed inside, and bags must be deposited at the gate. Visit it after the stupa rather than before, because it makes more sense once you have seen where the objects were found.
