Before you go
Varca Beach with elderly parents: what to know
- Walk on the firm wet sand near the waterline rather than the soft dry sand, and carry a folding stool or ask your hotel for loungers.
- Plan beach time before about 10 am and after about 4 pm; the middle of the day is hot and humid even in winter.
- Sea entry can shelve quickly and the surf pulls; swim only inside the lifeguard flags and keep a companion close.
- Beach shacks have sand floors and few handrails. Choose a restaurant or resort table if steps and sand are a problem.
- Distances between the beach, the village and restaurants are longer than they look, so keep a taxi number from your hotel.
Easiest first
Places in Varca Beach sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Church of Our Lady of Glory, Varca (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — Mostly level ground around the church and a single nave inside, with pews for sitting. Steps at the entrance are likely; check on arrival. The churchyard is shaded in places.
- Feed More Bar & Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Tables and chairs on a level roadside setting, which suits older diners better than shack seating. Parking is available. The bar means evenings can be livelier, so choose lunch for a calm meal.
- Misha's Hut (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — A simple terrace with tables and chairs on level ground, which is easier than a shack on sand. It can be crowded at meal times, so go slightly off-peak. Ask about steps at the entrance.
- Waterfall Cafe, The Zuri White Sands (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Level, indoor and cool, with proper seating and short distances from the resort entrance. This is the easiest meal on the beach for anyone who finds sand, heat or steps hard.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Sunset Paradise (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Seating is on or near sand, with plastic or wooden chairs and few handrails, and the walk from the road may be soft underfoot. Ask for a table close to the entrance and take a torch for the return after dark.

Practical tips for Varca Beach
- Swimming. Lifeguards patrol major South Goa beaches in season. Swim only in the marked area, obey red flags and keep children close. In the monsoon, sea swimming, coastal water sports and fishing are prohibited.
- Heat and sun. Even in winter the midday sun is strong and the air humid. Use a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water, and rest in your room through the middle of the day.
- Getting around. The beach is walkable, but restaurants on Fatrade Road, the church and Margao need a taxi, auto or scooter. Agree the fare first, or ask your hotel to book a driver.
- Shacks and seasons. Shacks are licensed seasonally, roughly October to May, and can change hands. Check a place is open and ask the price of seafood sold by weight before you order.
- Money. Carry some cash for autos, shacks and small restaurants, some of which do not take cards.
- Church dress. If you visit Our Lady of Glory, dress modestly, keep your voice low and avoid photographing worshippers or services.
- Evenings. Varca is quiet after dark. Do not count on much lighting on the beach or lanes, so carry a torch and book a taxi back if you eat away from your hotel.
- Wildlife and dogs. Stray dogs rest on many Goan beaches. Give them space, especially with small children.
