Plan 01

1 day in Varkala

  1. 01

    Day 1: Cliffs and temple

Arrive and settle into a clifftop hotel with a sea-facing room. Spend the morning walking the Varkala Promenade, browsing the small shops and cafés perched above the beach. Around midday, descend to the Varkala Beach (also called Papanasam Beach) to see the sand and water springs said to have healing properties. Return to the clifftop for lunch. In the late afternoon, visit the Janardana Swami Temple if it is open and you wish to, observing any dress codes. Alternatively, rest at your hotel. Spend the evening on the promenade as the light softens, watching the sun dip toward the horizon and the cliffs turn deep red and orange. Dinner at a clifftop restaurant overlooking the beach.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Sun and heat: The clifftop has almost no shade, and the sun reflects off both sand and sea. Plan beach and sightseeing time before 11 am or after 4 pm, and rest indoors through the middle of the day, especially outside the cooler November–February months.
  • Getting around: A private taxi or driver is the easiest way to reach the temple, Sivagiri Mutt or day-trip sights like Kappil and Anjengo. Autos work well for short hops within town. The clifftop promenade itself is walkable, so save vehicles for anything outside it.
  • Walking and stairs: The clifftop path is flat, but every route down to the beach involves a staircase, and step counts vary a great deal between them. Check a staircase before committing to it with children or older relatives, and pace the climb back up.
  • Money: Cards and UPI work in most clifftop restaurants and larger shops, but carry cash for autos, small stalls, boat rides at Kappil, and temple offerings. Get a clear price before boarding a boat or hiring a driver for the day.
  • Dress and temple etiquette: At Janardana Swami Temple, men are generally expected to remove shirts before entering the main shrine, and modest dress is expected of everyone; the inner sanctum is open to Hindu worshippers only. Dress is more relaxed at Sivagiri Mutt, though modesty is still appropriate.
  • Swimming safety: Currents at Varkala's beaches can be stronger than they look, and conditions vary along the same stretch of sand. Ask your hotel or a lifeguard which section is considered safe on the day, and be more cautious outside the main lifeguard season of roughly November to February.
