The short answer

Best areas to stay in Varkala

  1. 01

Clifftop promenade (North and Central Varkala)

Best for: Travellers who want sea views, evening walks and direct access to shops and restaurants

This is the heart of Varkala: narrow lane with hotels, guest houses and restaurants stacked on the cliff edge, offering unbeatable sunsets and a social, walkable atmosphere. Trade-off: some noise from other guests and occasional vehicle traffic on the narrow lane. Choose a hotel with good soundproofing and, for elders, verify that your room is not too many stairs from the lift.

  2. 02

    South Cliff area

Best for: Quieter stays with sea views, away from the main promenade bustle

A few kilometres south of the main clifftop, less crowded and more peaceful. Good for travellers seeking solitude, though you may need to walk or take an auto to restaurants. Good for seniors who prefer calm.

  3. 03

    Beach-level (near temple and staircases)

Best for: Families willing to descend stairs for beach access and a more immersive beach experience

A few small guest houses and huts sit at beach level, giving direct sand access and morning swims. Trade-off: the descent and ascent involve many stairs—difficult for elders with mobility issues. Also, the beach can be loud in high season.

  4. 04

Inland (Sivagiri area, a few km from the coast)

Best for: Budget travellers and those seeking a quieter, less touristy base

Near the railway station and Sivagiri Mutt, this area is more local and less aimed at beach tourism. Cheaper accommodation, but a 5–10 minute auto ride to the clifftop. Good if you plan to use local transport and want to avoid cliff-top prices.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Varkala

  • Choose a clifftop hotel with a lift and sea-facing room; the promenade is mostly level and walkable. Many small guest houses lack lifts, so ask before booking.
  • Plan beach or temple visits in the morning or late afternoon, avoiding the 11 am–4 pm heat. Rest at your hotel during these hours.
  • Wear sturdy shoes with good grip; the promenade can be uneven in places, and stairs to the beach are steep. Temple floors are often wet and slippery.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. The clifftop offers little shade, and the sun reflects off the sand and sea.
