Vasai, once called Bassein, sits on a creek about an hour north of Mumbai on the Western Railway line. It is the older, calmer half of the Vasai-Virar twin cities, and its main draw is a vast ruined Portuguese fortress that still dominates the coast.

The area's history is layered. Traders from across the Arabian Sea came here, the Gujarat Sultanate held it, and in 1534 the Portuguese took it under the Treaty of Bassein. They made it the capital of their northern province, and Fort Bassein became the second most important Portuguese settlement after Velha Goa. The Marathas under Chimaji Appa took it in 1739, and the British followed. The 1802 Treaty of Bassein between the East India Company and the Peshwa was signed here.

Today that history survives in the fort, in Catholic churches such as the one dedicated to Saint Gonsalo Garcia, who was born in Bassein, and in Arnala Fort, a quiet sea fort on an island about 13 km north. East of town, Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary protects forested hills and a temple.

Vasai is a day-trip and short-stay destination rather than a resort. Plan for November to February, early starts and sturdy footwear, and use the town's trains and autos to move between sights.

What and where to eat in Vasai.

Food to try in Vasai

Food and restaurants

Vasai's food reflects its Catholic, Koli and Agri communities: fish curries, prawn and bombil dishes, sol kadhi and local sausages, alongside everyday Maharashtrian snacks such as misal pav and vada pav. Named restaurants are best chosen on arrival; small local eateries near the station and the creek serve fresh fish thalis, and vegetarian options are easy to find, especially around Vasai Road.

Shopping in Vasai

Shopping

Shopping is local: markets near Vasai Road for clothes, vegetables, fruit and household goods. The area is known for its bananas and flowers in local farming, but there is little in the way of tourist craft shopping; Mumbai is better for that.

Choose without overthinking

Which Vasai experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Vasai Fort or Arnala Fort, if you only have time for one?

Choose Vasai Fort for scale, churches and easy access. Choose Arnala for a quieter island setting, if you can manage the water crossing.

Tungareshwar or Vasai Fort?

Tungareshwar suits walkers and birdwatchers who want green space; Vasai Fort suits those who want history and photography.

Day trip from Mumbai or an overnight stay?

A day trip is enough for the fort and church. Stay overnight if you want to add Arnala or Tungareshwar without rushing.
