Plan 01

1 day in Vasai

  1. 01

    Day 1: Fort and church

Reach Vasai Fort soon after it opens, walk the ramparts and ruined chapels, and climb a watchtower for the creek view. After lunch, visit the Saint Gonsalo Garcia church in Gass before returning.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Vasai Fort (Bassein Fort)2 to 3 hoursModerateNovember to February, early morning; avoid the monsoon when paths are overgrown and muddy

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Vasai Fort (Bassein Fort): The fort is large and flat but the ground is uneven, with broken steps, loose stone and overgrown stretches. Shade is patchy and seating is limited. Older visitors can stay around the main gate and the nearest chapels, and use a hired vehicle to cover distances inside.

  1. 01

Day 1: Vasai Fort and church

The fort in the morning, rest at midday, and the church in the afternoon.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Arnala or Tungareshwar

Visit Arnala Fort in the morning if sea conditions allow, or choose the Tungareshwar forest and temple walk for a calmer day.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Arnala Fort2 to 3 hours plus travelModerateNovember to February, in the morning; avoid rough monsoon seas

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Arnala Fort: Getting to and from the island involves a short boat or jetty transfer, which can be awkward for anyone with mobility issues. Inside, the ground is flat but uneven, with stone walls and little shade. There are few facilities.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Vasai trip for parents and children

  • Start early in the cool season; the fort has little shade.
  • Use a hired auto or taxi inside and between sights rather than walking in the heat.
  • Keep to the area near the main gate if the uneven ground is difficult.
  • Check sea and tide conditions before planning Arnala.
  • Avoid the monsoon for forts and treks.
  • Heat: Humid and warm most of the year. Visit forts in the early morning.
