The short answer

Karikili Bird Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Worth adding if you are already at Vedanthangal and like quiet water. It is a lesser-known, simpler stop with fewer facilities. Go in the cooler months, confirm that it is open to visitors, and treat it as a short add-on rather than a destination.

History and context

The story behind Karikili Bird Sanctuary

Karikili was notified as a sanctuary in 1988 by combining two tanks. It was added to the list of Ramsar wetlands of international importance on 8 April 2022, along with Vedanthangal.

Why it matters

Why Karikili Bird Sanctuary is worth your time

Karikili is part of the same wetland system as Vedanthangal and shows how the region's irrigation tanks double as bird habitat. Where Vedanthangal is a nesting site, Karikili works mostly as a foraging site, so seeing both gives a fuller picture of how the waterbirds use the area.

Its Ramsar listing in 2022 recognises that importance internationally. For a visitor it is a reminder that these small, rain-fed tanks matter well beyond their size, and that the quiet, unpolished experience is part of what is being protected.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Karikili is the low-key sibling. The sanctuary was made by joining two tanks, and the birds move between it and Vedanthangal depending on the season: Vedanthangal is where many nest, and Karikili is a feeding ground. About a hundred species have been recorded, including northern pintail, garganey and common sandpiper in winter.

Expect open water, reed edges and wading birds rather than a crowded nesting colony. The rewards come from patience: scan the shallows for sandpipers and waders, watch for egrets and herons working the margins, and look over the water at dawn when it is calmest. Binoculars are essential.

Because it is less developed, plan for self-sufficiency. Bring water and a hat, and check the route with your driver, since village roads can be narrow. Combine it with Vedanthangal in a single morning by visiting the better-known sanctuary first and Karikili afterwards.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm access with the forest office first
  • Go early and bring water and a hat
  • Carry binoculars
  • Visit Vedanthangal first, then Karikili
