Vedanthangal is a farming village in Madurantakam taluk of Chengalpattu district, about 75 km south-west of Chennai. It is known for one thing, and that is enough: a small rain-fed irrigation tank where painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, egrets and cormorants nest in trees standing in the water. The sanctuary was formally protected in 1936 and is widely described as the oldest in India.
It is a slow, modest place rather than a grand one. There is a short bund path, a watchtower and a handful of tea stalls. The experience depends on the monsoon: after good rains the colony is loud and crowded, while in a dry year the tank may hold few birds. Check recent conditions before you go.
A second sanctuary, Karikili, lies about 10 km away, where many of the same birds feed. Madurantakam, with its large lake and the Eri Katha Ramar temple, is the nearest town. Most visitors treat the area as a half-day or full-day trip from Chennai, Chengalpattu or Mahabalipuram; an overnight stay is rarely needed.
For older travellers it works well when planned: paths are flat and short, but facilities are limited, so go early, carry water and food, and plan comfortable stops in Chengalpattu.
