Velavadar is not a town to explore but a landscape to watch. The Blackbuck National Park sits in the Bhal region of Bhavnagar district, a stretch of open tropical grassland between seasonal rivers, with salt flats and tidal mudflats along its southern edge where the Gulf of Khambhat reaches in. It was declared a national park in 1976 to protect the blackbuck, India's spiral-horned antelope, and it covers about 34 sq km.
The visit itself is simple. You go in by vehicle with a mandatory guide in the early morning or late afternoon, and you spend a couple of hours moving slowly along grass tracks. Blackbuck herds are the sure thing, nilgai are common, and in winter the evening brings a large roost of migrating harriers. Wolves, striped hyena and jungle cat live here too, but they are seen only now and then.
Because there is no village to speak of at the park gate, most visitors treat Velavadar as a half-day trip from Bhavnagar, about an hour away. That works well for families and older travellers: the safari involves no walking, but it does mean early starts, dust and very little shade. The park is closed from mid-June to mid-October, and the comfortable months are November to February. Pair it with Bhavnagar's temples and lake for a relaxed two-day trip, or add a separate long day to Palitana.
