Khodiyar Mandir, Rajpara: what visitors should know first

History and context
The story behind Khodiyar Mandir, Rajpara
Gujarat Tourism says Maharaja Wakhatsinhji first set up a modest shrine at Rajpara and that Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji later turned it into the larger temple. He also founded the Shri Khodiyar Mandir Trust in 1953.
The founding story is a legend rather than documented history, and sources differ on whether the temple dates from the 18th or early 20th century; the larger temple belongs to the later period.

Why it matters
Why Khodiyar Mandir, Rajpara is worth your time
Khodiyar Mata is regarded as the guiding goddess, or sahayak devi, of the Gohil Rajputs, and Rajpara is where her story is said to have ended. In the legend, the ruler Wakhatsinhji asked her to follow him from Sihor on condition that he not look back; when he did, at Rajpara, she stopped, and the shrine grew there.
The present temple is credited to a later ruler, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji, who enlarged a modest earlier shrine, built the access road and a railway station named after it, and founded the temple trust in 1953. It is a good window into how the state's rulers and their devotions overlapped.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Aim for a weekday morning, ideally before 9 am, when queues are short and the lakeside is calm. The temple sits on the bank of Lake Tataliya along the Bhavnagar–Rajkot highway, just before Rajpara village, and your driver can take you straight to the entrance.
Inside, queue for darshan and follow the flow of worshippers. Lapsi, a sweet made of broken wheat, is the main prasad, so it is worth trying a small portion. At the back of the temple a ropeway links the base to a shrine on a hilltop; ride it if you want the view without the climb.
On Sundays, Tuesdays and full-moon nights the temple is very busy and some pilgrims walk from the city at dawn, which is memorable but demanding. Combine the visit with Takhteshwar for a devotional half-day.
