Vellore sits on the Palar river, about 135 km west of Chennai, surrounded by the low Javadi hills. Its centrepiece is Vellore Fort, a 16th-century granite fortress with a wide moat that holds a temple, a church, a mosque and a district museum within its walls. It is also the place where Indian sepoys rose against the East India Company in July 1806, an event often described as the first large-scale mutiny of its kind.
Much of the city's modern life revolves around the Christian Medical College and Hospital, begun by Dr Ida Scudder as a one-bed dispensary in 1900. Many people arrive here for treatment and stay for weeks, so lodges, restaurants and transport are built around patients and their families as much as around tourists. That makes Vellore a practical stop for travellers combining a medical visit with a few days of gentle sightseeing.
Beyond the fort, the area offers the Sripuram Golden Temple, small forest outings such as Amirthi Zoological Park, and older village temples at Virinchipuram and Thiruvalam. None of these require long hours; a day or two covers the main sights comfortably. Heat is the main planning issue: from March to June the afternoons are punishing, so most travellers choose November to February and keep a rest break in the middle of the day.
