Yes, as a half-day trip west of Bhagalpur. Go outside July and August, when the Kanwar pilgrim crowds make it very busy, and expect steps and a short rise to the temple.

History and context

The story behind Ajgaibinath Dham, Sultanganj

Sultanganj's old names, Jahngira or Jahnu-Giri, link it to the legend of Sage Jahnu. The temple's present Nagara-style shikhara was renovated in the 19th century by Rani Kalavati. The Sultanganj Buddha was found in 1861 and is now in Birmingham.

Why it matters

Why Ajgaibinath Dham, Sultanganj is worth your time

Sultanganj sits on the southern bank at a point where the Ganges flows north, which is considered especially sacred. The old name Jahngira, or Jahnu-Giri, ties the town to the legend of sage Jahnu, who swallowed the Ganges and released it. Devotees offer water at the temple before continuing to Deoghar.

The town is also known for the Sultanganj Buddha, a copper statue about 2.3 m tall dating from the Gupta–Pala period, found in 1861 and now in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The statue is a reminder that this stretch of the Ganges was an important Buddhist and Hindu landscape long before Vikramshila was founded.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Reach Sultanganj by road from Bhagalpur, about 25 km, or by train to Ajgaibinath Dham station. From the riverbank, look at the temple on its rock and, if you can manage the steps, climb up to it. The shikhara you see was renovated in the 19th century by Rani Kalavati.

From the temple, the views over the Ganges are wide, and it is an easy place to understand why the river is called Uttarvahini here, flowing north. Sit near the water for a while and watch the boats and pilgrims. This is the same stretch that the dolphin sanctuary protects, so you may see river wildlife if you are patient.

If you come in July or August, you will see Kanwariyas collecting Ganga water to walk to Baidyanath temple at Deoghar. It is a colourful sight but it brings heavy crowds and traffic, so older visitors are better off visiting in another month.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Avoid July and August unless you want to see the Kanwar crowds
  • Dress modestly and remove shoes
  • Go early to avoid the heat and traffic
  • Take care on the steps and wet surfaces
