The ruins of a great Pala-era Buddhist university, a stretch of the Ganges kept for river dolphins, and Bhagalpur's silk looms: a quiet, riverside corner of eastern Bihar.

Vikramshila is a place you come to for a single, specific reason: the brick ruins of a Buddhist monastic university at Antichak village, in the Kahalgaon sub-division of Bhagalpur district. The Pala king Dharmapala founded it in the late 8th or early 9th century, and for a few centuries it ranked with Nalanda and Odantapuri among the leading mahaviharas of eastern India. Its fame rested on Vajrayana teaching, and the scholar Atisha is among the names linked to it. It was destroyed around 1193 and then forgotten until excavations in the 20th century.

What you see today is a large, flat, grassy site with a central cruciform stupa, a square monastery of small cells around its edge and a modest site museum near the entrance. It is atmospheric rather than dramatic, and best taken slowly with some reading beforehand. The ruins are about 38 km from Bhagalpur city according to Bihar Tourism, so most visitors base themselves in Bhagalpur and make a half-day out of it.

Around the ruins, the area is more rewarding than first appears. Bateshwar Sthan, a Shiva temple on a rocky outcrop by the north-flowing Ganges, lies a few kilometres from the site. The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary protects roughly 60 km of the river between Sultanganj and Kahalgaon. Bhagalpur itself, known as the Silk City, is the place to see tussar weaving and buy fabric, and Sultanganj and Mandar Hill add temple and pilgrimage stops.

This is not a polished tourist destination, so plan accordingly. Facilities near the ruins are basic, public transport is limited, and the climate is hot and humid for much of the year. With a hired car, a winter visit and realistic expectations, it is an easy, uncrowded trip for parents and grandparents who enjoy history.

What and where to eat in Vikramshila.

Food to try in Vikramshila

Food and restaurants

Bhagalpur and the surrounding villages eat much as the rest of Bihar does: litti-chokha, dal and rice, sattu drinks and parathas, with river fish popular along the Ganges. Sweets such as khaja and local pedas are sold in the main bazaars. Near the ruins at Antichak, expect only small tea stalls and simple dhabas, so carry bottled water and some snacks from Bhagalpur.

Most hotels in Bhagalpur serve a mix of North Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. For families and older travellers, eating at your hotel or at a busy, clean restaurant in town is the safest choice; ask for less spice if needed, and stick to bottled or filtered water. We have not verified individual restaurants here, so check recent reviews before relying on any one.

Shopping in Vikramshila

Shopping · 1 guide

The reason to shop in this region is silk. Bhagalpur is called the Silk City and its tussar fabrics are listed as the district's One District One Product. Nathnagar and Champanagar, in the older part of the city, are the traditional weaving areas, and shops across Bhagalpur sell saris, stoles, dupattas, scarves and fabric by the metre. Prices vary with the type of silk and the weave.

Buy from established showrooms or cooperative outlets where possible, ask whether the fabric is handloom, and check for the Silk Mark label. Bargain politely but expect less flexibility in fixed-price shops. There is almost nothing to buy at the ruins themselves beyond tea and snacks.

One District One Product

Bhagalpur silk

Bhagalpur's One District One Product (ODOP) listing is silk, and the city is known as the Silk City. The district's own ODOP page lists saris, stoles, dupattas, scarves and angavastras, and says that more than 35,000 handloom weavers work on about 25,000 looms. Look for tussar and handloom fabric at established shops in Nathnagar and the main bazaars.

Choose without overthinking

Which Vikramshila experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Vikramshila ruins or Bateshwar Sthan, if you only have time for one?

Choose the ruins if you care about history: the stupa, the cells and the site museum explain what a mahavihara looked like. Choose Bateshwar Sthan if you prefer a living temple by the river, with a shorter, easier visit. They are only a few kilometres apart, so most visitors do both.

Ajgaibinath at Sultanganj or Mandar Hill?

Ajgaibinath is the easier visit: a temple on a river rock, and a short, level stop on the road west of Bhagalpur. Mandar Hill is longer and involves climbing, but it is rich in Jain and Hindu tradition and has a more open, rural setting.

A dolphin boat trip or the silk lanes of Nathnagar?

The dolphin sanctuary is for wildlife and river views, and sightings are never guaranteed. The silk lanes are a sure thing and easier on older travellers, with seats and shade in shops. Do both on a two-day trip, silk first.

Base in Bhagalpur or in Kahalgaon?

Bhagalpur has far better hotels, food and transport, but adds a long drive each day. Kahalgaon puts you close to the ruins and Bateshwar Sthan but has only basic facilities. Most visitors choose Bhagalpur.

Know before you go

Vikramshila travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat and season

Bhagalpur's mean daily maximum reaches about 37 °C in April and May, and the monsoon months from June to September bring over 170 mm of rain a month. Visit between November and February for the most comfortable weather.

  2. 02

    Getting there

There is no scheduled commercial airport at Bhagalpur as far as we could verify, so most visitors reach Bhagalpur Junction by train, or drive from Patna. A hired car from Bhagalpur is the practical way to reach Antichak and Bateshwar Sthan.

  3. 03

    Walking at the ruins

The Vikramshila site is flat but large, with uneven brick surfaces and little shade. Allow a leisurely hour or two, wear flat, closed shoes and use the museum as a rest stop.

  4. 04

    Cameras and gadgets

Bihar Tourism notes that electronic gadgets require permission from the Archaeological Survey of India at the ruins. Ask at the entrance about camera rules before you start photographing.

  5. 05

    Facilities and money

Toilets, food and cash machines are limited near Antichak. Carry water, snacks and some cash, and use facilities in Bhagalpur or Kahalgaon before heading out.

  6. 06

    Dress and temple etiquette

Dress modestly at Bateshwar Sthan, Ajgaibinath, Mandar Hill and the Jain temples at Champapur. Expect to remove shoes at temple entrances, and ask before photographing inside. Leather may be restricted at Jain temples.

  7. 07

    The Ganges bridge

The Vikramshila Setu at Bhagalpur partly collapsed in May 2026, and its repair status has changed several times since. Check current local news if any part of your plan involves crossing to the north bank.

  8. 08

    Buying silk

Buy from established showrooms or cooperative outlets, ask whether a piece is handloom, and look for the Silk Mark. Prices depend on the type of silk and weave, so compare a few shops before buying.

Vikramshila with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit between November and February. The ruins have little shade, and summer heat and monsoon humidity are both tiring.
  • Hire a car with a driver from Bhagalpur and agree the route and waiting time in advance. Public transport to Antichak is slow and crowded.
