How to reach Vikramshila by air

There are no scheduled commercial flights at Bhagalpur's airfield as far as we could verify, so check current services. The practical airport is Patna's Jay Prakash Narayan Airport (PAT), about 230 km west of Bhagalpur by road, which is roughly four to five hours depending on traffic.

How to reach Vikramshila by train

Bhagalpur Junction (BGP), on Eastern Railway, is the main railhead, with connections towards Patna, Howrah and Delhi, including the Vikramshila Express to Anand Vihar. From the station, the ruins are about 38 km by road. Check current timetables with Indian Railways before booking.

How to reach Vikramshila by road

Antichak is about 38 km from Bhagalpur by road, in the Kahalgaon sub-division, and about 13 km from Kahalgaon town. Buses and private vehicles run from Bhagalpur towards Kahalgaon. Sultanganj lies about 25 km west of Bhagalpur and Mandar Hill about 45 km to the south.

Getting around Vikramshila

A hired car and driver from Bhagalpur is the easiest way to cover the ruins, Bateshwar Sthan and Sultanganj. Autos and e-rickshaws work within Bhagalpur but are impractical for the ruins. Agree timings and the return trip with the driver in advance, and be back before dark.

Easy transfers to and in Vikramshila

  • Hire a car with a driver from Bhagalpur and agree the route and waiting time in advance. Public transport to Antichak is slow and crowded.
  • The ruins site is flat but spread out, with uneven brick surfaces in places. Wear flat, closed shoes, carry water and a hat, and rest at the museum.
  • Facilities near the ruins are basic. Use the toilet in Bhagalpur or Kahalgaon before you set out, and carry snacks.
  • Return to Bhagalpur before dark. Rural roads in the area are poorly lit.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
