Before you go
Vikramshila with elderly parents: what to know
- Visit between November and February. The ruins have little shade, and summer heat and monsoon humidity are both tiring.
- Hire a car with a driver from Bhagalpur and agree the route and waiting time in advance. Public transport to Antichak is slow and crowded.
- The ruins site is flat but spread out, with uneven brick surfaces in places. Wear flat, closed shoes, carry water and a hat, and rest at the museum.
- Facilities near the ruins are basic. Use the toilet in Bhagalpur or Kahalgaon before you set out, and carry snacks.
- Return to Bhagalpur before dark. Rural roads in the area are poorly lit.
- Check the current status of the Vikramshila Setu bridge at Bhagalpur before planning any trip towards the north bank of the Ganges.
Easiest first
Places in Vikramshila sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Bhagalpur Silk and Nathnagar Weaving Lanes (Shopping · 2–3 hours) — Shops are mostly at street level, with seating offered while you browse. Lanes in the old city are narrow and crowded, so a car to the shop door helps, and midday traffic is slow.
- Champapur Jain Tirth (Places of worship · 45–60 minutes) — The complex is mostly level with paved paths and shaded areas, and dharamshala lodging and meals exist on site. Steps at some temples and wet floors are the main concerns for older visitors.
- Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for a boat trip) — Boarding a small boat from a ghat or riverbank can be awkward, with steps, mud and uneven planks. Boat trips are exposed to sun, with no shade or toilets, so older travellers should be helped on and off and carry water and a hat.
Some walking — plan a break (4)
- Ajgaibinath Dham, Sultanganj (Places of worship · 1–2 hours) — The temple stands on a rock, so there are steps and uneven ground. Crowds are heavy at festival times, and seating is limited, so older travellers should visit on a weekday morning outside Shravan.
- Bateshwar Sthan (Places of worship · 1–1.5 hours) — The temple area is mostly accessible, but there are steps and uneven ground on and around the hill, and floors can be wet. Seating is limited, so older travellers may prefer to stay in the lower area.
- Mandar Hill (Places to visit · Half day (3–4 hours including travel each way)) — The hill is small, about 700 feet, but includes steps and uneven paths. Facilities are basic, so older travellers may prefer to see the lower areas and the pond.
- Vikramshila Mahavihara Ruins (Places to visit · 1.5–2.5 hours including the museum) — The ground is flat but the site is large, with uneven brick surfaces and little shade. Seating is limited, so plan rests at the museum, carry water and a hat, and avoid the hot months.

Practical tips for Vikramshila
- Heat and season. Bhagalpur's mean daily maximum reaches about 37 °C in April and May, and the monsoon months from June to September bring over 170 mm of rain a month. Visit between November and February for the most comfortable weather.
- Getting there. There is no scheduled commercial airport at Bhagalpur as far as we could verify, so most visitors reach Bhagalpur Junction by train, or drive from Patna. A hired car from Bhagalpur is the practical way to reach Antichak and Bateshwar Sthan.
- Walking at the ruins. The Vikramshila site is flat but large, with uneven brick surfaces and little shade. Allow a leisurely hour or two, wear flat, closed shoes and use the museum as a rest stop.
- Cameras and gadgets. Bihar Tourism notes that electronic gadgets require permission from the Archaeological Survey of India at the ruins. Ask at the entrance about camera rules before you start photographing.
- Facilities and money. Toilets, food and cash machines are limited near Antichak. Carry water, snacks and some cash, and use facilities in Bhagalpur or Kahalgaon before heading out.
- Dress and temple etiquette. Dress modestly at Bateshwar Sthan, Ajgaibinath, Mandar Hill and the Jain temples at Champapur. Expect to remove shoes at temple entrances, and ask before photographing inside. Leather may be restricted at Jain temples.
- The Ganges bridge. The Vikramshila Setu at Bhagalpur partly collapsed in May 2026, and its repair status has changed several times since. Check current local news if any part of your plan involves crossing to the north bank.
- Buying silk. Buy from established showrooms or cooperative outlets, ask whether a piece is handloom, and look for the Silk Mark. Prices depend on the type of silk and weave, so compare a few shops before buying.
