Plan 01

1 day around Vikramshila

  1. 01

Day 1: Ruins and a riverside temple

Leave Bhagalpur early by car so you reach the Vikramshila ruins at Antichak in the cool of the morning, about 38 km away. Walk the central stupa and the monastery cells, then visit the small site museum near the entrance. Have a simple lunch in Kahalgaon or carry food from Bhagalpur. In the afternoon, drive on to Bateshwar Sthan, which is a few kilometres from the ruins, and sit near the Ganges for a while. Return to Bhagalpur before dark; roads and street lighting are patchy.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Bateshwar Sthan1–1.5 hoursModerateMorning, November to February; avoid Shravana crowds

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Bateshwar Sthan: The temple area is mostly accessible, but there are steps and uneven ground on and around the hill, and floors can be wet. Seating is limited, so older travellers may prefer to stay in the lower area.

Plan 02

2 days around Vikramshila

  1. 01

Day 1: Vikramshila and Bateshwar Sthan

Spend the morning at the ruins and the site museum, then visit Bateshwar Sthan in the afternoon, with its temple and the views from the rocky hill. Return to Bhagalpur for the night.

  2. 02

Day 2: Silk and the river

Visit the silk weaving lanes of Nathnagar and the Champapur Jain temples in the morning, buy fabric from an established shop, then rest after lunch. In the late afternoon, make a short boat trip on the Ganges towards the dolphin sanctuary stretch if the water level allows and you can find a reliable local operator.

Plan 03

3 days around Vikramshila

  1. 01

Day 1: Vikramshila and Bateshwar Sthan

Start early at the Vikramshila ruins and the site museum, then continue to Bateshwar Sthan for the temple and the view over the river. Return to Bhagalpur for the night.

  2. 02

Day 2: Bhagalpur silk and Champapur

Walk the weaving neighbourhood of Nathnagar in the morning, see the Champapur Jain temples, and shop for silk from established sellers. Keep the afternoon free for rest. Take an evening stroll along a Ganges ghat in Bhagalpur.

  3. 03

Day 3: Sultanganj and Mandar Hill

Drive about 25 km west to Ajgaibinath Dham at Sultanganj, which stands on a rock in the Ganges. If energy and time allow, continue to Mandar Hill in Banka district, about 45 km south of Bhagalpur, which is a longer day with some climbing. Otherwise, treat Sultanganj as a half day and return early.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Mandar HillHalf day (3–4 hours including travel each way)ModerateMorning, November to February

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Mandar Hill: The hill is small, about 700 feet, but includes steps and uneven paths. Facilities are basic, so older travellers may prefer to see the lower areas and the pond.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Vikramshila trip for parents and children

  • Visit between November and February. The ruins have little shade, and summer heat and monsoon humidity are both tiring.
  • Hire a car with a driver from Bhagalpur and agree the route and waiting time in advance. Public transport to Antichak is slow and crowded.
  • The ruins site is flat but spread out, with uneven brick surfaces in places. Wear flat, closed shoes, carry water and a hat, and rest at the museum.
  • Facilities near the ruins are basic. Use the toilet in Bhagalpur or Kahalgaon before you set out, and carry snacks.
  • Return to Bhagalpur before dark. Rural roads in the area are poorly lit.
  • Check the current status of the Vikramshila Setu bridge at Bhagalpur before planning any trip towards the north bank of the Ganges.
