How to reach Yala by air

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI) is near Hambantota but had no scheduled airline service when we checked. Most visitors fly into Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB) and continue by road, about 243 km to Yala Block 1 per the park's site, which is a long day. Check flights from Indian cities with airlines.

How to reach Yala by train

No passenger train serves Tissamaharama or Yala; Wikivoyage says there is no rail to Tissamaharama. Use a bus or a car and driver instead. Do not plan the trip around a railway station.

How to reach Yala by road

The park's site lists routes from Colombo via Ratnapura, Udawalawe and Tissamaharama, from Kandy via Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela and Haputale, and from Galle via Matara and Hambantota. A car with a driver is the easiest option for older travellers; allow generous time.

Getting around Yala

Tuk-tuks cover short distances in Tissamaharama and Kataragama. Safaris use open jeeps booked through hotels or the park's site; Palatupana is the main entrance listed. Agree prices in advance and confirm what the jeep fee covers.

Easy transfers to and in Yala

  • Choose a half-day safari and book a jeep with a cushioned seat and a driver who will drive slowly. Tracks are bumpy.
  • Carry water, a hat, sunscreen and a thin long-sleeved top; the jeeps are open and the sun is strong, with daily highs around 31 degrees Celsius.
  • Take any regular medicines in your hand luggage and carry insurance that covers treatment and evacuation. The park is remote from major hospitals, so ask your hotel for the nearest clinic.
  • Keep the afternoon free for rest. A pre-dawn start followed by a long drive is tiring at any age.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
