Day 1: Safari and Tissamaharama
Start before dawn with a jeep to the park gate so you enter when it opens just after 6am, when animals are more active. Spend the morning driving the tracks, then return to your hotel for breakfast, rest and air conditioning through the heat. In the late afternoon walk beside Tissa Wewa and visit Yatala Vehera, the stupa in Tissamaharama. Eat early, as dinner options are simple and the morning start is hard to shake.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Tissa Wewa About 1 to 2 hours Easy Early morning or late afternoon Yatala Vehera About 45 minutes Easy Early morning or late afternoon Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Pacing
Pacing a Yala trip for parents and children
- Choose a half-day safari and book a jeep with a cushioned seat and a driver who will drive slowly. Tracks are bumpy.
- Carry water, a hat, sunscreen and a thin long-sleeved top; the jeeps are open and the sun is strong, with daily highs around 31 degrees Celsius.
- Take any regular medicines in your hand luggage and carry insurance that covers treatment and evacuation. The park is remote from major hospitals, so ask your hotel for the nearest clinic.
- Eat only designated rest areas in the park, and bring dry snacks. Toilet facilities inside the park are basic.
- Keep the afternoon free for rest. A pre-dawn start followed by a long drive is tiring at any age.
- Entry: Check the official ETA site before travel. The Sri Lankan notice lists India among countries eligible for a free ETA for stays of up to 30 days from 25 May 2026. Rules change.
